I was told by HSBC that I can't contribute (ie. without penalty) to my TFSA account (although they have opened one for me) until I've lived here for more than 183 days this year. I arrived only last month.

With the internet rate so low on savings at big banks, I attempted to open a higher internet rate account on quite a couple online banks (EQ bank, Alterna, Oaken financial) and none successful. The reason for refusal is that I don't have at least 6 months of credit history. Even when I have...

ICBC website says a Learner needs to wait at least 12 months before he/she can take the road test. So if ICBC will dq the bonus, then will have to pay in full for one year! If I want to clarify, is this a licensing office question or is this a autoplan broker question? So for now, since...

Can I drop my middle name on new passport?

[list] Sorry, I was asking how your cousin got the name of citizenship card changed. I guess if it was 8 years ago, it may be the same as how I got my passport given names inverted without an issue. I think it's something new at the licensing, citizenship, passport office now that if one...

Life without PR card and credit history

Not BC, unfortunately. If one is just landed, you can still go sit for the written test and road test with your foreign passport and COPR but you'll only be issued a no-photo temporary paper stating you are legal to drive (if you passed). But again, this paper won't be accepted as ID anywhere.

Life without PR card and credit history

    1. Online banks offers better interest rates. Just landed without a job yet, everything bit of income counts. Say, TD offers 0.5% on a high interest savings account with requirement of at least $5000 balance, EQ banks offers 2% with no minimum balance needed. 2. Don't know about Ontario, BC...

When did your cousin do it? I believe a legal name change is needed, at least for residents of BC.

    International Driving licence

Must I have good credit history to be employed?

I understand companies want to check on one's references upon hiring. However, is credit history something most employers will check? As new immigrants, we don't have any. Will that put as at an adverse position in finding jobs?

Can I drop my middle name on new passport?

Yeah, I think it's something new that the government (at least for BC) rolled out. Way back then (like 20 years ago) people used to put common names on their drivers license e.g. Suzy for Susan and it was acceptable. Then this person started using Suzy for everything as that's why shows on her...
