Hi all, I'm helping my sister prepare her application for TRV. Her situation is this:
  • She is currently unemployed and is being financially supported by her boyfriend who is a Canadian citizen
  • She has children from her previous marriage and has no property under her name.
  • Her boyfriend will be paying for her trip and all other expenses. She will also be staying at his apartment when she arrives in Canada.
  • We are applying for Multiple Entry Visa and stated in the application form that she wants to stay for at least six months
We've completed most of the application forms and we will be applying online. We're just a little bit confused with the list of required documents that are on form IMM 5877 Temporary Resident Visa (Manila Visa Office Instructions):

If you are not paying for your own trip:
  • Provide a letter signed by the person paying and a photocopy of their passport, or other official identification with photo and a bank certificate proving that they have sufficient funds.
  • Describe how this person is related to you.
  • These documents must be dated within three months of the date on which the application is submitted.
Explain the purpose of your trip (as applicable):
  • details of your itinerary in Canada;
  • provisional travel arrangements (airline or hotel booking);
  • letter of invitation from the person or business you will visit;
  • registration at a conference, letter from your employer.

My questions are:
  1. Is this "letter" different from the invitation letter that her boyfriend is supposed to give her?
  2. Do we really have to provide an itinerary? Like list what she will be doing on Day 1, Day 2, etc.,?
  3. Her boyfriend's bank balance is CAD$11,000. Is this amount sufficient enough to prove that he can cover her trip and expenses for the duration of her stay?
  4. She only recently opened her bank account (like less than 10 days ago) and her bank balance is CAD$4000 (the money was deposited by her bf shortly after she opened her account). Should we include a copy of her bank statement showing that amount in her application? Or should we only submit the bank statement of her bf since he will be covering all her expenses?
TIA! If you have any tips/advice you could provide us to help get her application approved, we would be really grateful!

Six months is too long a visit. Makes it look like she has plans to remain here long term. Cut that way down.

What ties is she going to show to her home country? Employment?

Are her kids coming with her? How old are they?

Does she have previous travel to countries requiring visas such as the US or UK?

We are in a very similar situation to you, and we just reapplied using the IRCC Portal https://portal-portail.apps.cic.gc.ca/signin?lang=en. We had originally applied on July 27, 2021 using the IRCC Account, but having had no responses since completing biometrics in early August we decided that reapplying using the IRCC Portal was appropriate.

Our original application had both an "Invitation" letter and a letter for "Proof of Financial Resources of Supporter." The application through the IRCC Portal only requested a letter for "Proof of Financial Resources". So, depending on the application process, you may need both letters, as they do contain different information.

We didn't provide an itinerary; on both applications we only stated that she would be staying with me and our family here. We stated that she will be staying for 6 months or however long the border services agent allows at time of entry. So although we didn't provide a detailed itinerary, we also haven't been approved yet, so I can't say whether or not they will be asking us for more details.

I can't say what is an appropriate bank balance, but we provided my most recent pay stub as proof of income; we also provided my bank statement but I don't keep a balance in it. The instructions just stated to provide proof that I have a bank account. Hoping it's not an issue for us.

I'm not sure what to say about your last question either... but hope this helps a bit.

She must include her own bank statement. Your sister’s profile has a lot of red flags. Not being employed, asking to remain for a long period of time, having minimal ties to the Philippines other than her children, families and a bf in Canada, etc. Realistically it will be difficult yo get approved. Does she own property?

We’re changing it to one month instead.

We’re thinking of submitting her children’s birth certificates to prove that she has kids in her home country and that she will be returning home to take care of them. She’s unemployed so we can’t use employment as proof of ties. 2 of her kids are over 18 and one is 13 yrs old. They’re not coming with her to Canada.

Unfortunately not. She’s only been to Saudi Arabia and she went there for employment purposes, not tourism or family visit.
