I read a piece of news about turnout:

"As of 8.45 p.m. ET Tuesday with 99.41 percent of polls reporting, 16,134,539 of 27,366,297 registered electors showed up to vote — a turnout rate of 58.96 percent.

That's lower than the 2019 federal election, which saw 18,350,359 of 27,373,058 eligible voters cast ballots, resulting in a turnout of 67 percent."

Did you notice? Eligible voters, 27,373,058 in 2019, and 27,366,297 in 2021.
In 2021, there are 6761 fewer Canadian citizens than in 2019.
From 2019 to 2021, IRCC really took a two-year holiday.

What a “attention to detail”.

Yes, I am deeply worried about the future of Canada. I thought about it carefully. In the past two years, the number of people who turned 17 into 18, plus the number of permanent resident got citizenship, is less than the number of deaths, plus the number of people who gave up Canada citizenship.

Yeah I think its well known that Canada's birth rate is below replacement and the death rate will only accelerate due to excess deaths (from covid-19) + older people dying naturally (they are becoming an even higher percentage of the population). Add citizenship bottlenecks and viola!

I don't think this is right - the population of Canadian citizens over 18 is not identical to the population of registered electors (that I'm aware).

They might and should be fairly close but lots of reasons they wouldn't be the same; for example, I don't think it's at all automatic that Canadian citizens abroad are registered.

(I took a quick peak at statscan numbers and what's available in estimates elsewhere - and I could get *somewhat* close to the 27 million but only by making some guesses, but big gaps)

Correct!
Not every Canadian is registered to vote even some who live in Canada are not interested in voting.
Plus , current population of Canadian citizens in Canada is only over 70%, others around 21% are permanent residents, rests are on visas.

Figures I've been able to find say that about one million (eg a bit more than 2.5%) are non-pr foreigners (students, foreign workers, temp for résidents, asylum seekers) or 'visa holders'.

https://www.rcinet.ca/en/2020/11/05/canada-proposes-enabling-temporary-residents-to-become-citizens/

The other thing to note is statscan and ircc really cannot have perfect info about the number of Canadian citizens abroad - deaths aren't automatically reported, amongst other reasons.
