Hello,

I was wondering if a visitor visa is being processed currently for immediate family members. I am planning to apply for my parents and my sister next month and would like them to visit here around August/September. It's showing 2.5 months processing time on the CIC website. I am a permanent resident here. As far I have heard, immediate family members of PR can travel under current restrictions. Please let me know if anyone applied for such a visa recently. Thanks

Yes visas are being processed. Your parents are immediate family but your sister is considered extended family. Your parents can travel with a visitor visa but your sister needs a visitor visa and written authorization to travel and show her travel is essential. How old is your sister?

My sister is 19 years old, unmarried, and dependent on my parents. If my parents are traveling, they will not be able to leave her behind.
Btw, my parents already visited me a couple of years ago. That time my sister stayed with my brother while my parents were visiting me. However, my brother moved to Florida a year ago, so my sister will be left alone if my parents visit me without her. So I want her to be added to the application.

Your child or the child of your spouse or common-law partner can be considered a dependent child if that child meets the requirements below on the lock-in date:
  • They’re under 22 years old, and
  • They don’t have a spouse or common-law partner

The issue is not that. The issue is she is considered your extended family so will need written travel authorization.

Yeah, I was reading that here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/coronavirus-covid19/visitors/immediate-family.html

But I will need this only after the application is approved and my sister prepares to travel, right? It's not needed during the application, right?

You can apply for it at the same time as per the guidelines in the link. She needs to show essential travel during Covid.
I'm not sure if her visit will be considered essential. I wanted to build my case on the fact that, she is dependent, and if my parents are coming, she needs to be with her.

First step is getting the approved visitor visas. Do your family members need biometrics too?

Just wanted to confirm, when I am applying for a visitor visa, I don't need the authorization letter at that time for my sister, right?

Yes they require biometrics. My parents already provided their biometrics last time they visited me. But my sister will need to enrol her biometrics, once the application gets processed.

No you don’t need auhorization letter to apply for visa. Once she applies then apply for the authorization letter. Depending on where you live, biometrics may be an issue if offices are closed or at limited capacity.

Gotcha. My father is the principal applicant. So he will include my mother and my sister in his application.

Looking at this link, it seems like, for a new visitor visa application, we need to attach a signed and completed application for authorization and statutory declaration. (So if the application is approved, they will also provide the authorization letter for the extended family member. Immediate family members do not need authorization letter)

Btw, biometrics are open in my country.

Canada. In India, many people are going to other countries to get their biometrics completed (Dubai) or waiting to open.
