I have a question, I will try to get straight to the point, your advice is much appreciated.

I have an undergraduate Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a postgraduate Honours Degree in English Literature. I am from South Africa, I work in Japan as an English and Math teacher at an elementary school. I have been working in Japan for 8 years teaching English in government schools and now teaching English and Maths in a private school.

My husband is currently studying towards a degree in electrical and electronic engineering in South Africa. He will finish at the end of 2021 and graduation is in May 2022. He is obviously still to have work experience using his qualification.

My question is, who should be the main applicant in our case? Any helpful insight will be appreciated.

Are you wanting to apply now?

If so, then you should be the primary applicant based on the information you've provided.

You're aiming for a score around 470 to be selected.

Simple, use the CRS calculator and whomever has the higher score should be the main applicant.
I have the highest score, I checked. But is my degree.....OK?? I feel like his degree is much more attractive in Canada but it will mean waiting for him to gain experience instead of starting the process now.

Yes. We want to apply now. I am just not sure if my degree in English Literature fits teaching English (sounds crazy I know) without a degree in education.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you are applying through Express Entry, selection is entirely points based. What your degree is in doesn't influence whether you are selected or not. It's all about how many points you have.

Also make sure you research what it will take to be allowed to teach in Canada so that you know the process in advance. You will need to go through a certification process.

Do I have to be certified to teach in Canada before I start the express entry application or before I come to Canada if I get an ITA?

People normally do this once they have arrived in Canada. Not before ITA. Just make sure you research what this will take and understand that you won't be able to teach when you first arrive in Canada. Teaching is also generally not an in-demand profession (meaning it can be difficult to find a permanent job once certified). Good luck with the process.

I see. I will do my research. Thank you.
