Hi All,
This is a great thread. We are planning on moving to Canada with our US born child and apply for his PR while in Canada. Our question is regarding the health insurance coverage while his application is in progress. Today we contacted BC Health Insurance office regarding insurance for our child who does not have a Canadian PR.

Our question to the BC Health Insurance office was, will our child be eligible to get health insurance while we have applied for his PR.

This was their answer.
1. We as a family(2 parents + child) will need to apply for BC health coverage with the following documents
a) PR Cards for both the parents as we are PR holders
b) Sponsorship application receipt for our child and birth certificate to confirm parentage

2. It would take about 2.5 months to get the coverage from BC Health Insurance office
a) For parents as we are PR holder will have a permanent coverage plan
b)For child who is not yet a PR holder, will have a temporary 12 month coverage plan
c) After the child gets his/her PR they will convert the temporary coverage to a permanent one

So, the above information does not match with information on many other threads that "your child will not qualify for Canada's health coverage since he/she does not have a PR". The only caveat is we will need the sponsorship application receipt which I believe will take 2 months + 2.5 months to get BC health insurance. So ~5months to get coverage for a dependent child whose PR sponsorship application has been filed.

Has anyone in this group gone through this process? Are there any other difficulties that I am not aware? By sponsorship application receipt do they mean AOR?

Thanks!

BC seems to have made recent changes to both spouses and children being sponsored. Healthcare is provincial and will depend on the province. Many of the answers are for Ontario who does not provide coverage for children being sponsored.

Hi @ca_hopeful,

Yes, that's correct.

I did apply for MSP for my twins who were holding only ETA just after applying for their PRs.

In my case, it took only 2 weeks.

Also, you can apply for that online and the agent said it is faster.

You can apply that here. https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/health-drug-coverage/msp/bc-residents/eligibility-and-enrolment/how-to-enrol

BTW, you need a stamp in your child's passport as a proof of entry into Canada (you must request a stamp from a border services officer after completing a kiosk transaction). Or, you can submit the boarding pass instead of that, too.

Good luck!

Hi,
My child has moved from India to Calgary on visitor visa. Just today I was able to get Alberta coverage for him. As he is on visitor visa he got the coverage for 6 months and extension will be provided based on further visa extensions. The only requirement is to have the stamp on the passport will be provided on request only. I have missed that and had to request CBSA for travel history.

Although BC has different rules, the rule is that coverage will be provided as long as child has valid visa to stay in canada.

Thanks @Agnes8181. Just to understand, what is ETA?

Thanks @pnmj87 . Glad to know that we can apply for our child's medical insurance while their application is in progress.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/2020/09/ircc-speeding-up-processing-for-spousal-applications.html

Hopefully this means us too.. since it's in the same office and the same system.. fingers crossed u guys
but they have not mentioned family or depended children , they are just talking about the spouse,
though spouse is a grownup person who can understand and live for few more months without their partner.
but for CHILDREN it is hard to understand, specially for younger who are less then 5 or 6 years or old.
Canadian govt don't have emotions for children.
its very senseless.
we single parent who are with children in some other country waiting to fly, are spouse also,
if this processing is only for spouse, then its is another hope less decision, as like only children are going to spread corona in Canada.

Processing running now in 12 months crossed time line, flights are reopened, when asking no response at all. More than a month passed getting pre arrival mail, ecas still says in process, is too much, not to take exam of patience. NDVO is silenced why?

I think maybe they are doing that because of the protest. It’s unfair that they are given priority over children. Why not speed up the children process also?
