Hello need some help, applied for a visa extension in Feb/2020 for 6months and last week I got a medical request, and today I received my visa extension which is for 3months expires in Oct. I just don't get it why it was for only 3months and why they had to ask for medicals, we are planning on getting married so that I can apply for spousal spounsership but our town city hall is still closed to the public so we can't access the marriage license.
So my question is do I have to apply for another extension after 2months if we can't get married during that period.thanks

You have to have status to submit spousal paperwork. you have 90 days from status expiry to apply for restoration however. It would be better to apply for extension. When you do submit your spousal application you will need to apply for an extension during processing or apply for owp to keep an implied status in order to prevent the need to extend.

The 3 months extension could be due to some factors based on what you claimed on your extension application.

Medicals to my understanding is usually a common request right now due to covid everything is going a bit slower and understandably so. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do except try to extend and wait for things to reopen up for you.

Yes, if you also want to apply for an OWP you must be in status meaning you need to apply for an extension

You can apply for an extension the day before your status expires online. According to the ircc officer i spoke to as long as they recieve the application before status expiry while it is processing you have implied visitor status so take that as you must. I know that the processing times have been seen at 4-5 months last time i checked.

You haven’t mentioned how long have you already been in Canada. Six months extensions aren’t automatic. Individuals typically get six months authorized stay when they arrive , but extensions as mentioned aren’t always six months , especially if a individual has already been here a period of time
The VO officer would /could of taken into account how long you’ve been “ visiting “

You get a medical request for any stay that is longer than 6 months.

Three months extension is not surprising, especially if you've already been in Canada for some time. Visa officers regularly consider how long you've been in Canada already, and how long processing time takes, in calculating how long they will extend your visa.

Consider the 3 month extension a strong signal that you need to get your "stuff" together and either apply as a spouse or leave Canada.

I applied in feb and mentioned that i wanted more 6months to qualify as common law, which i will make a year in september, we had considered to get married in summer but we cant get a marriage lisence since the city hall is closed and not issuing any. So i think i have to go with common law sponsership at this moment, so i have to wait until september coz thats when i make a year to submite my common law sponsorship.and for work permit i understand i have to be in status for OWP. So do i have to send in a visa extension together with my sponsership file

Im not sure im understanding what you are trying to say could you reword that. From my understanding you need an extension of 6 motnhs to reach common law and you have not applied for extension yet however you want to send in both sponsorship file and extension? If that is the case you can not send a sponsorship application for common law without meeting the common law requirements. It will just be automatically denied. You only need to apply for the extension as of right now.

Extensions can be submitted online and are usually the best bet in my opinion.
