I wasnt around in the era when Pierre Trudeau banned extra billing which is essentially private health care. What were the reasons for that? Equality? Socialism?

Certainly private care will reduce wait times for those who pay out of pocket. But what will it do for those who rely on the universal system? Remember that some doctors will leave the universal system to go private. Leading to a loss of resources in the public system.

Even if wait times for public system remain the same this will cause a divide in society. Have vs have nots.

It was to control cost.

It would be interesting to see how direct cost to patient would change if Canada allowed private billing or extra billing.

Right now the private doctors cannot simultaneously bill public and private. Also if they bill above the fees of the public system they will get in trouble.

I can almost guarantee that when private health care comes in some doctors will leave to go private and earn more right away. If demand picks up you will see more doctors leaving. Businessmen will also come into the picture to build new clinics and hospitals.

The ones in the public sector will then ask for some sort of fee increase to match the public or else they will all go private. Especially the good doctors and surgeons.

It will be interesting for sure!

Canada is lenient on crime.

Was listening on the radio today about how liquor stores are being robbed everyday often violently because the robbers are on meth.

Also it is hard to prosecute because the robbers wear masks.

And even if they manage to prosecute the judge tends to be lenient.

Just something for prospective immigrants parents to consider when moving here.

Looks like it is bad in Ontario.

The number of acute care hospital beds in Ontario has stayed effectively the same for 20 years, at around 20,000 while the province's population has grown by three million people. Ontario now has fewer acute care hospital beds per capita than any other province: 1.4 beds for every 1,000 people. That's on par with Mexico, and half the number in the U.S.

Nor is hospital overcrowding restricted to Ontario. Recent reports of overflowing patients come from Montreal, Saskatoon, Moncton, N.B. and Kentville, N.S.

This problem is worse in some parts of Canada but not across all of Canada.

Ontario debt to GDP ratio is 39.9% the highest across all provinces too. What have they been spending on? Hydro power?

Hospital overcrowding and longterm care at capacity is pretty much the norm across Canada which is what I have been saying for a long time. It is slightly better in Alberta and Saskatchewan because of it’s younger population. It is a huge problem. As a practicing physician in Canada these issues must be discussed in various journals of notices you receive. I am surprised you have no idea this is going on. It is even an issue in Alberta just to a lesser degree or facing certain cities in particular like Red Deer.

Ontario liberals screwed Ontario's economy with their wastes on useless pet projects and hydro boondoggle with their useless green energy projects driving Ontario's debt up to become one of the highest substandard debt in the world.

Strange that you wouldn't believe the article from the Toronto Sun and make counter claim with articles supporting your belief in how great Canada health care is but you finally accept that there is an medical problem, a well known issue as that, from an article from CBC.

The only reason the issue is being brought up now by CBC is to make Doug Ford look bad. Trying to imply that since it is happening under Doug Ford, it's his fault. This problem has been going on for years under liberal Ontario government and not a peep about it during the 15 years of Ontario liberals. This is the same CBC that tried to get Trudeau to blame Trump for downing the Ukraine plane. No wonder CBC's viewership is at an all time low. CBC used to be a respectable news station reporting unbiased facts. Now they are just pushing a narrative or agenda to suit their ideology.

Hospital overcrowding is an issue in almost ALL developed nations.

I am aware just that I don't see it any different from Singapore where I trained for the most part of my career. In fact I think it is worse in Singapore!

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/hospitals-facing-severe-bed-crunch-take-unusual-steps

And remember Singapore is ranked very highly by WHO and many places above Canada!

I live out West in Alberta. Apologies if I dont know Ontario well.

I do know that Ontario and Quebec have some of the highest debt to GDP ratios in Canada. And yet they can afford to give huge rebates for people buying Teslas. No such programs in Alberta. Lol!

I have read about Wynn's excesses. But Ontarians voted for her didnt they? Before that it was the guy who said Alberta was to blame for ON weak economy. Oil keeping the canadian dollar high.

Canada is divided. Not united. That's the reality. East vs West. Federal sides with East because that's where the votes are to win power not the West. Confederation is broken.

So forget about looking to the Feds to solve anything especially for the West. Meanwhile I think the East should seriously curb their spending.

I always find it ironic , and a bit comical that people from out West, Alberta specifically are the first to criticize Ontario, when in the same posting , they say “ I don’t know Ontario , well “
From someone whose ancestors helped open up the west, aka homesteaders, to being born and raised in Alberta, I think I’m qualified to comment, since I’ve lived in the West & East . Maybe do a little research on the Heritage Trust Fund . That fund that was started during the Lougheed era, was supposed to save for the future, diversify the economy , and improve the life of Albertans
From 1980-2014, Alberta generated almost $190 BILLION in revenue from natural resources, guess what the balance was in 2014 ? $17.5 Billion
Guess where the majority of the funds went, that was supposed to be for the future ?
Successive Conservative Governments raided the fund for such projects as forestry , aviation and food processing . Aviation ? Yes, the Alberta Government actually owned an airline back in the mid 70’s. Pacific Western Airlines .
Now compare that fund to one set up in Norway . Alberta constantly withdrew money. Lougheed, Klein all had their hands in the pot . As for diversification. If Alberta had diversified, maybe the provinces books would not be so screwed up as they are now . I lived during Trudeaus NEP, and the rage that ensued . I remember Red Square being built in downtown Calgary .The province thought that the good times would never end . Boom, bust, boom. Every time there was a bust the government would say they had to diversify. They never did . They also hoped for the next boom to come to bring in the money, and the party would continue. Hate to tell you, the parties over

Yes it is. Party is over.

But despite all the mismanagement Alberta is still in a better shape than Ontario. Where is Ontario's Trust fund?

Fact is east is in way much more debt than the west. I have done some research about the current state of affairs.
