Hello, me and my common law partner were living together for 3 years in Canada, as a result I have not seen my family in 3 years so I just came back down to the US to visit for a couple weeks. We haven’t started the sponsorship application yet.

My curiosity is, will I run into much trouble trying to come back into Canada? Will the good record of doing my extensions and stuff still make this a hassle?

You could have issues, yes. Were you just constantly getting six-month extensions? Did you work here?

A three year stay as a visitor is unusual and you might be questioned. Or you might be waved through.

Did you bring your most recent visitor record with you (if it's not stapled into your passport already)? It's not a travel document but they do usually like to see it if you have a valid one

No I did not sadly :(
You should still be okay. If you're traveling through a land border, they might pull you into secondary inspection to verify that you do have a valid visitor record (idk if they can/do verify that from the booth) but that's nothing scary. I've only flown in once, so I don't know how the airport procedure really works. Still, just answer the questions you're asked honestly and I don't think they'll give you too much trouble
