Is it being considered for voting? Too many bills and on top of it the merit based proposal draft... seems another ploy to divert... dont know. not holding breath for it because:

In 2017-18, Republicans had absolute control of the House, Senate and executive branch. They could have enacted anything they wanted. They passed one piece of major legislation. Remember? A huge tax cut for the wealthiest among us followed by indebting future generations to pay for it.

What you say definitely makes total sense..but the examples given were for full immigration reform. This country cap removal is just a small change to existing system.

Moreover whoever (IV) is pushing for this has a professional DC lobbyist on board to get things moving and they have convinced senator grassley who is considered highly influential to not to oppose the bill.. there is huge support from silicon valley too.

So HR1044 passed the house.. wondering what's going to happen in Senate. Given that all senators from a party try to stay together during votes, if all Democrats (48) vote for this along with 16 republican senators who have already co-sponsorsed this bill, it could easily cross the magic 60+ votes needed to cross Senate!

And what about Rand Paul's block of S386 before that? Think it is a coincidence?

What you say definitely makes total sense..but the examples given were for full immigration reform. This country cap removal is just a small change to existing system.

Moreover whoever (IV) is pushing for this has a professional DC lobbyist on board to get things moving and they have convinced senator grassley who is considered highly influential to not to oppose the bill.. there is huge support from silicon valley too.

True, those may be for full reform but why would rep controlled senate would take one part of immigration issue without anything in return? After that why would pres sign without any gain for rep voters? REP voters are not now keen on removing country quota as its not affecting any EU applicants. So i dont know see any urge for them in doing anything. No politicians work for the country, they just work for the future votes.

I get mixed image about IV. I am thinking that DC has lobbyists from top tech companies too who are moving these further.

ya i dont know why all of a sudden both chambers will work on similar bill individually rather than discuss first and draft the common ones both support? This seems to be a great drama and hoping it doesnt end that way (like before and before and....)

Well, if there are 60 votes, it doesn't mean much as bills with 60 votes are filibuster proof.

Even if he hadn't blocked, I'm pretty sure some other republican senator will try to oppose this.. some senators are openly voicing their opposition to people who write to them asking for support saying that they want diversity and need something that caters American workers. They modestly conclude saying that they would support a full fledged immigration reform in future.

The way crazy Indian lobby has managed to get this bill past Congress with few hundred thousands of dollars they had, it almost feels like you can get any law passed in this country as per your preferences if you have adequate money and DC contacts. Guess that's what corporations precisely do. I read somewhere that senator Lee was once opposing this bill, now he seems to be all for it. How? Probably $$$..

There would be lobbying support from tech companies for sure. But this is unlikely to be a top lobby priority for them. They may just support the cause strongly if someone leads the show.

And don't go by what Breitbart keeps screaming about this bill. Most republican voters don't have any clue on what this is all about.

Tons of republican congressmen have supported this bill despite Breitbart screaming on top voice.. I'm pretty sure they knew their constituents well than Breitbart or anyone in media do. If the consequences among electorates were that serious why would they support the bill even after having open voting where everyone gets to know who voted for yes or no.

I think their claims on Yoder losing for supporting this bill is too good to be true.. jason chaffez , one of the original proponent of this bill has won continuously for 4 Congress despite backing this bill aggressively. Yoder just lost along with bunch of other Republicans because people wanted Democrat Congress this time.

Yup in worst case it could just be an exercise to calm down agitated backlogged folks and keep them hopeful may be for another 3 years or so.

I sincerely wish that this bill passes. It would certainly be a step towards "fairness". I hope that the USA which is a great country amongst countries recognizes this and can rise above petty politics.

Last week a standard petition letter was going around in our office.....so I also signed and submitted it which went to the senator here. Yesterday I saw the reply from his office.....pretty standard template reply but no outright support for 386. The senator from our area who happens to a Democrat, his stand is more in favor of comprehensive reform, for backlog he mentions to increase the cap limit, something on the lines that diversity is desirable. That is pretty much it....typical politician talk.....no clarity.

Have they ever done anything to protest national origin discrimination? They didn't have to support FCFS of 1044, at the least they should have publicly supported a merit based immigration. I'm sure they have more employees affected by national origin discrimination than the travel ban. Ever wondered why this selective empathy? Follow the money.

At the same time, companies can keep the salary level low by having more people trapped on visas without making them switch easily.

Yup which is why all this talk of bills seems a bit delusional like someone who keeps shifting the goal post for backlogged folks and all this is understandable given the money involved. What is really disappointing is that the executives of Indian origin (born in India) in top firms turning a blind eye to it.
