My fiance is coming to Canada on a visitor visa in July. We are having our wedding ceremony in August and planning to apply for PR shortly after. Just looking for guidance on how long we should purchase health insurance coverage for him as the process is quite lengthy timewise?

Thanks!

We'll be applying inland, as well applying for the OWP.

You'll need it for at least 19 months from when you submit your application.

16 months minimum to get AIP.
3 months to wait to actually get healthcare.

Well, it was 16 months for people who submitted 16 months ago.

Who knows what it'll be for people submitting now.... 16, 8, 30, 58. It's anyone's guess.

I'm in the same position as you, lauralee. I'm going to Canada in July to marry my Canadian fiance (but applying outland)

We did quite a bit of research before we found insurance. We are buying 12 months of TIC Inpatriate health insurance. They cover 80% of maternity benefits (if the due date is within 10 months of the effective date) and this really suits me, but will of course be no use to your fiance.

Might be worth giving them a call though? When your husband becomes eligible for provincial health cover, TIC reimburse you, I believe.

Unfortunately, there is barely any insurance company that offers benefits beyond any other travel insurance cover. It's a very scary thought!

Good luck!

Hi there,

I'm not sure you know the answer but I saw your signature, it seems like you gained lots of experience not only from your case but also from your wife's application. So I would like to ask you a question:

I applied in land in Aug 2017. Last year, I bought a package of health insurance when I just got to Quebec. But now my husband's contract at work also covers my health insurance, so I just wonder if I still need to buy a package of health insurance like last year?

You need to check what exactly your husband's coverage covers for you. For example, my wife was covered under my health benefits from work when she first landed. But it only covered supplemental stuff like dental, etc... things not covered by provincial health care. So I still bought a package for her until OHIP kicked in.

Thank you so much for the response. I will ask my husband to see if the package is the same with the tourists' package.
