Hi Guys,

I have a serious situation here and need expert advise on this. My sister who recently got separated wants to study in Canada, mainly in Saskatchewan. She has a 5 year old daughter. I will be the one who is going to plan and support her in this matter. I recently processed my husbands immigration and soon we will get PR (hopefully). I am confused on what university and course to choose. and how to take the process. I did whole immigration process on my own but i dont know if I should hire a consultant for my sister or I do it on my own. Please suggest me what should i do?

Secondly, if she gets a student visa, can she bring along her daughter to Canada? and her daughter can study in public school for free?

thirdly, I would appreciate you guys if you know of any blog or website where i can learn more about this process.

For now i have these questions. i will ask more as i will proceed.

thanks in advance for taking out time and replying.

To be approved for a study permit, your sister will need to select a univiersity or college program that makes sense in light of her previous education and any work experience. Which university or college program she selects is up to her - but again, it needs to make sense based on what schooling she has completed earlier and any jobs she has held. To be approved, she will need to demonstrate that she (or her sponsor) have a balanace that is equal to first year tuition + at least $10K living expenses + $3K to $4K in travel expenses. She will also have to demonstrate that she has ties to her home country and no plans on remaining in Canada long term.

Yes - she can bring her daughter provided her daughter's husband gives her approval to take the child to Canada.

thank so you so much scylla. I was hoping to get a reply from you and you did. :) +1 for you

One more question: if she choose one year study program does she still need to show proof of funds for 1 year?

Yes - she need to show proof of funds for 1 year.

I would strongly recommend against selecting a one year program if her goal is PR. She should select a program that is at least two years so that she qualifies for a three year PGWP. This will increase her chances of qualifying to apply for PR.

1. Yes, unless you were awarded sole custody of the child with the ability to remove him/her from his country by the courts.
