Hello

My husband traveled few days ago due to a funeral. We are supposed to join him. His pr card is broken in two but readable. All the stories I read are of people who didn't have their pr card with them and they were stranded. I am curious if anyone was able to board a flight with a damaged card. The person at the consulate told him to apply for a one-way visa/authorization to enter (I guess he was talking about the PTRD) or say that his card broke on the way to the airport.

I know about the PTRD but just want to find out if anyone was able to travel in this case, especially if you were traveling with young kids.

Yikes! I don't recall ever seeing a post like this. How did the card `break'?

So...when you say that it's `readable', that must be visually readable and NOT readable by a kiosk, or machine at the airport, right? If the `strip' is intact, it may (marginally) make the situation a bit less dire, but I can't say for certain.

If your husband is a U.S. citizen, he wouldn't even need the PR Card to return to Canada via a commercial carrier, but I'll guess that he is not a U.S. citizen. He should report the card as being damaged to IRCC and apply for a PRTD ASAP.

Good luck!

Apply for a PRTD and ask for it to be expedited and submit proof or your return travel ticket. Without the PRTD they will not be able to fly into Canada unless they are a US citizen. Also report thar the card is damaged to IRCC and ask for a replacement to be sent to your home in Canada. I would take a picture of the damaged PR card and keep it for the time being.

Thank you. So I was trying to find a similar situation and noticed that my husband traveled with a damaged card in 2022 (I saw a post I was about to reply to and then noticed it was mine). His card was bent. I think I was then under the impression that because it wmsays on IRCC website that with a damaged card, a PR cannot be denied entry, I completely forgot about it to remind him about the replacement as I am the one who makes all applications and he does not know about the exact process and requirements.

I dont see a barcode so I don't know which part has to be scanned but it is broken in the middle. I started the application for the PTRD but I saw they ask for proof of urgency. He traveled due to the death of a family member but I think this reason of urgency is when the person needs to travel back to Canada due to a funeral in Canada.

We are returning on the 25th of April (in 6 days including weekend) and I am thinking it's very short even for an urgent request. I didn't know if it changed anything that I am pregnant. I noted that a comment said that he could return if he was a US citizen as they don't need a visa. What about those who don't need a visa and are not US citizen? Is it that as a PR they cannot apply for a e-visa? I am asking this because my husband needs a visa and has one in his passport that expires in 2028. Could he fly as a TR? Does the check-in counter checks TRV? Would it have been canceled by IRCC?

Nope, not eligible to travel without a valid PR card / apply for other type of visa. It's either PR card or PRTD.

Basically if he will be let aboard the plane, he'll be allowed to enter Canada. But we cannot tell you if he'll be let on board the plane. I doubt the airlines could tell you either without seeing the card/making a decision at boarding.

He can either try that or - more certain - travel to USA and cross at land border. (He will be let in at land border even with the damaged card)

Likewise no-one can tell you the processing time for PRTD. Sometimes quite quickly for those clearly resident in Canada and compliant with residency obligation. But six days is very limited time to get the passport even stamped.

Again, the most certain is travel through USA.
