Hi,

I was recently renting with my wife for the last 5 years but now my landlord wants to evict me as my wife recently passed away. Her disability benefits covered most of the rent. I have PR status but on a very low income wage. I cannot afford the rent on my earnings. Where we live is quite remote so I am totally out of touch as to whom I should contact regarding seeking alternative accommodation or housing assistance. The fact that I am now living alone would I be entitled to anything ? I am not sure if a Canadian pension plan was paid for my wife. She didnt work for the last few years due to her illness. Any advice would be great on this.
Thanks

I'm not sure if (co-tenant passed away) is a valid reason for eviction. Probably check this government website for details:

There are typically very long waits for public housing and single men, especially if you are not a senior, are low on the priority list for subsidized housing. Would start looking for shared accommodations within your budget. You can contact the province and your municipality but you will likely just be put on a waiting list. Would also look at ways to increase your income.

Go to Facebook marketplace and Kijiji and look for shared accommodations in your area (eg where you are renting a single room and share the kitchen and bathroom facilities with others). Also look for sublets.

Also if you live in a more remote community there may not be a ton of rentals but community may be aware of rental option potentials or people willing to rent a room, rent in exchange for upkeep, etc. Living in remote communities on a low income can be incredibly challenging because of increased costs of goods and reliance on things like private transportation. You may need to consider moving to a less remote community.
