Hello everyone.

My mother was a PR in the 70s and 80s for about 15 years. She lost her status due to R.O not met. This year she regained her status through parent sponsorship(PGP).

I mean, she meets all the requirements but the big issue is the 20 year undertaking. I believe it leaves her with OAS but no GIS.

Can she be eligible for OAS + GIS?

Thank you

Well that's an interesting question...
It would seem that if she was newly sponsored, she'd be ineligible, but since she's already lived more than 10 year in Canada, she might be able to claim.
"
If you moved to Canada as an immigrant
If you are an immigrant who is sponsored
If you are a sponsored immigrant and have lived in Canada for less than 10 years after age 18, you cannot receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement while you are sponsored unless your sponsor:"

Not sure that loosing your PR status totally negates any previous time in Canada. I would assume the sponsor obligations would negate previous status, but it isn't clear. I'd make an appointment with a tax attorney to look into it before applying, so you don't end up with a surprise invoice due to your sponsorship. I'd love to hear how this works out.

Hi Guys,

I have received a letter from Service canada to state that i am now eligible to apply for OAS . About 6 months ago. I did not apply all these days, but now, i filled up application for OAS & GIS and filed in person with Service canada office. My wife too applied in person for any possible allowances.
We appled in person 2 weeks ago. The agent said it could take up to 150 days to process. In reality, how long it takes ? We have lived here for 12 years and landed immigrants.

You appear to be planning on leaving Canada in the next 6 months so what is the point in applying.

It will likely take around 120 days to process since you applied by paper vs online.

If you leave Canada for more than 6 months
If you do not qualify for receiving Old Age Security outside Canada, your payments will stop if you are out of the country for more than 6 months after the month you left. You cannot collect the Guaranteed Income Supplement if you are outside of Canada for more than 6 months.

It’s a benefit determined by residency

It’s not akin to CPP

who said ?

You assume or what ?

Applying for PR Card renewal does not mean one will leave the country ?

And you did not answer my question though.

And are you in 65 category ?

Yea, GIS /OAS eligibility to receive depends on residency in that particular year.

By the way are you in 65 category, or you have seen some experience ?

Thanks for sharing the link, however i know the rules of canadian government.

My question is how long paper application takes for processing.

A quote from your previous post
“Can we apply for renewal of PR card by January 2025 ? Or should we wait until april 26 th 2025 ?

My Indian passport expires by february. So, i want to apply for card renewal by january 2025 itself. Is it fine ?

If needed, we can stay until april 26 th 2025, no need to hurry.”

No you will not qualify for any payment before you turn 65. If you plan on leaving in April you should not apply especially if you turn 65 around then.

You don’t get approved until you’re actually eligible.
I am not 65 but worked for government departments that administered benefits

People are NEVER given approval unless one is eligible for that benefit . That’s the law . What if that person passed away in the meantime?
Whats the point of having age based rules if said rules aren’t followed ?

If I sent in an application that wasn’t eligible it would be sent back to me , and copied to management for noncompliance.
This isn’t a game to try to circumvent the rules
I always wonder where people are from when they ask questions like this.
Dates are LEGISLATED. Ages are LEGISLATED

Well, you say people do not get approved until one turns 65.
IMO no.
They get approved and payment starts the next month after they turn 65.
They sent letter to apply !!
The government department sends letter to those who are likely eligible and turned 64. They start this process 1 year in advance after turning 64. I am sure you are not aware of this. If the government has enough info about the person they enrol automatically after 64 and ask you to apply.
Let us see if you are right or government letter is right

People visit other countries.
For 1 month, 2 months or even upto 6 months.
If a person stays in canada more than 6 months in a tax year/ Calendar year, one can take benefits in Canada not just OAS/GIS, any benifits.
And people get paid 1 month after they turn 65.
I bet you have no knowledge in this.

You are being ASKED to apply, it’s not automatic
You can delay OAS till your 70 if you want a higher payment
If you don’t respond to the letter it’s not processed
My father who is 90 waited till he was 70 for OAS since he didn’t need the money, since he worked 30 plus years and GIS is for low income , he didn’t qualify

The only time it’ll be automatic is if you don’t apply for CPP at 70.

Aka if you don’t respond to the letter nothing happens . Not everyone needs the money at 65, or wants it since it’ll push them to a higher income bracket and it’ll be clawed back
