They get approved and payment starts the next month after they turn 65.
They sent letter to apply !!
The government department sends letter to those who are likely eligible and turned 64. They start this process 1 year in advance after turning 64. I am sure you are not aware of this. If the government has enough info about the person they enrol automatically after 64 and ask you to apply.
Let us see if you are right or government letter is right
You can delay OAS till your 70 if you want a higher payment
If you don’t respond to the letter it’s not processed
My father who is 90 waited till he was 70 for OAS since he didn’t need the money, since he worked 30 plus years and GIS is for low income , he didn’t qualify
The only time it’ll be automatic is if you don’t apply for CPP at 70.
