As a Canadian citizen, do you have to apply for OCI (and renunciation) only from within Canada? I obtained Canadian citizenship and then moved to the US for a job (on a US work visa). I'd like to know if I can apply for OCI from the US.

If you have address proof of USA, it will work there too.

If you are waiting for an update on your child’s OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) application, it is understandable to be concerned about the timelines, especially with upcoming travel plans. Since you received acknowledgment on September 14 but no further updates, there are a few steps you can take.

  1. OCI Status Check: Visit the official OCI services portal to check the current status of the application. Sometimes delays occur due to verification processes or administrative backlogs.
  2. Visitor Visa Option: Yes, you can apply for a visitor visa for your child as a temporary solution. This is advisable if there is uncertainty about receiving the OCI card before your travel date.
  3. Timelines for Visitor Visa: The processing time for an Indian visitor visa typically ranges from 2 to 10 business days, depending on the country of application and the efficiency of the Indian consulate or visa application center in your area. Be sure to apply well in advance to avoid last-minute delays.
  4. Documentation Required: Prepare necessary documents, including your child’s passport, a completed visa application form, proof of your travel plans (e.g., tickets), and a copy of the OCI acknowledgment if needed.
  5. Communication: Reach out to the Indian consulate or the OCI helpline to expedite or inquire about both the OCI and visa processes.

It is better to apply from US only, to avoid this BLS shit. There will be just an additional doc that you have to show is you work visa from US. And off course the US address proof .

Hello,

I recently surrendered my Indian passport after acquiring the Canadian Citizenship, Now for Oci i checked the new declaration form to surrender the voter id card and ration card. For ration card my name is added as a family member in that. Do i have to delete that as well? Because Ottawa bls asking for voter id numbers and ration card number to fill in the form.

Yes you need to remove your name from family ration card.

I had opted for delivery option for OCI but later changed to pickup. However BLS website shows "(Passport Dispatched via Courier)" so it looks like they still mailed it using Purolator. Is there anyway I can get the tracking number and have my friend collect it ? I am out of the country currently and do not want my OCI to be lost.

what are the current time lines for OCI?
My application ack date is showing as 11/28 (Toronto). When can I expect to have my card received by me?

Friend cannot collect it, will go back to bls if you are not there to pick it up.

Hello ! I hope everyone’s well ! I am writing on behalf of a friend whose OCI application send it via postal and now status shows ‘returned’ due to a minor error in the application. I wanted to know what the next step would be. Should he wait until he receives the application via Return label Purolater currently no update on tracking or should he just send the corrected document ?

Thanks for your support !

Just wait to get your documents returned to you. Then fix the application and send it again. There won't be any tracking number updated on the returned application. The return process takes less than 7 days.

OCI applicant.
Born in India, never held an Indian Passport, and no access to birth certificate.
Per my prior consultation with Vancouver consulate associate was advised I may provided naturalization documents for the country which status was acquired via marriage and should suffice.
My walk in application shows under process as of August 2024.

Per Consulate inquiry they have advised due to current wait times may take additional 9-10 weeks. It is December 15, 2024 already!
Reference to provide passport surrender.
Reference to provide ration card or voter ID card surrender.

Frustrating that I have provided an affidavit/notarized document via my initial submission to BLS stating I never held an Indian passport.
I have spent $ to acquire a naturalized document and still getting a push back.
The delay or not providing a clear instructions what is lacking is so frustrating.

Anyone getting a push back for an application submitted prior of ration card or voter card rules. Now the consulate is asking to submit this document while application is under process?

OCI Changes - Voter ID to be surrendered. As per the new guidelines, OCI applicants have to sign mandatory declaration and surrender Voter ID, Ration card before applying for OCI. The ECI Voters website does not show any records on providing search criteria. Might be they haven't digitized all Voter ID's. Not sure how to surrender without knowing the EPIC number. Anyone experienced the same?

You can submit the declaration, and the process will proceed. It appears that the consulate began working on your application after the new rule was implemented, which is why additional documents are required. Since your application is not straightforward, patience is essential during this process.
