Accepted documents - proof of citizenship certificate

I have a general questions as it pertains to accepted document types.

I am applying for proof of citizenship certificate, and on the document checklist form under scenario 3, it says I need to provide:

proof of other nationalities acquired by you and your Canadian parent before February 15, 1977, if applicable to you

It does not state what specific documents are accepted here. Is a foreign passport (USA) accepted as proof of other nationalities? Are they asking for proof that you became a citizen before that specific date, or just generally that you became a citizen before that date? It is unclear.

Has anyone successfully submitted a passport for this requirement? Or are they looking for naturalization documents?

Under the law at one point historically, some citizens who acquired another citizenship (in some circumstances, anyway, ie how and when they acquired it can matter) would lose their Canadian citizenship. I think the question is about that and they are asking about that, not whether you have the documents to prove it.

This is one of these areas of citizenship law I don't know well though. You might use this tool to check:

Prior to that date, multiple citizenships were generally not allowed by Canada. If the parent, most likely being first-generation born abroad, had gotten their Canadian citizenship by descent automatically from the 2009 or 2015 Acts (because the birth had to be registered by age 2 prior to that date), then their children are not eligible because of the generational limit still in place. If your parent was born or naturalized in Canada, then this part is not applicable to you.

I don't know your situation, but if you are applying based on citizenship by descent and you are caught by the exception mentioned above, you may be better to wait until the government finalizes policy on citizenship by descent (related to a court case finding the current generational limit unconstitutional).

But that's speculative and I don't pretend to be an expert on that, either.

Thanks for your reply. My mother was born in Canada in 1961. She immigrated to the US in 1967 and obtained citizenship in the US through naturalization. I believe I am eligible to claim citizenship by descent under the current law. The question I have is regarding the document checklist CIT 0014 (proof of citizenship certificate) which says I need to provide proof of other nationalities obtained by my parent before 1977. I am unsure if her current US passport was satisfy this request or if we need paperwork issued prior to 1977 such as her US immigration paperwork.

If you have any insight here please do share, thank you.

Because your mother is a native-born Canadian, then the requirement is not applicable to you. If she had lost her Canadian citizenship before 1977 because of her parents, while it is true that she was not Canadian when you were born, she would have gotten it back automatically with the 2009 Act. The same Act also automatically gave citizenship by descent to all first generation born-abroad children (i.e.: you) of parents that had regained their citizenship by the Act.

The only document you need to submit is her birth certificate, her US passport or other American documents are not applicable or required.
