Hello to everyone.

My mom used to be a PR in the 70's and 80's but she lost her PR status due to R.O not met. She regained her status this year as a PR through a PGP sponsorship. I was wondering if she can be eligible for OAS+GIS. Sounds like it is possible but what about the sponsorship undertaking?

Thank you very much.

Do you qualify for Old Age Security

If you are living in Canada, you must:

  • be 65 years old or older (She is 75)
  • be a Canadian citizen or a legal resident at the time we approve your OAS pension application (She is a PR through PGP)
  • have resided in Canada for at least 10 years since the age of 18 (She previously lived in Canada for about 15 years)

Do you qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement?

If you are an immigrant who is sponsored
If you are a sponsored immigrant and have lived in Canada for *LESS* than 10 years after age 18, you cannot receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement while you are sponsored

Not likely but I guess you could attempt to do so. If you sponsored your parent through PGP you were supposed to be prepared to support them financially without government help because they typically wouldn’t qualify for things like OAS/GIS for 10 years which is also not enough to live off of.
