Any experience please if we can attend citizenship oath from outside Canada, overseas due to financial issues for family with kids? The ticket is so expensive it costs over $5000 for us and our return ticket by employer is in a year time, plus vacation days would mean losing income for 2 weeks

Only in extreme situation IRCC allows it. Cost of travel will not help you get an exemption.

Note that the kids if less than 14 don't need to come back, just take their PR cards with you. This should save you some of the financial burden going back to Canada for the oath will cost.

Can't even be bothered attending the citizenship ceremony...it should be mandatory to be present or no certificate at all.

You cannot attend the oath from outside of Canada. You need to chose between citizenship and the costs / vacation time.
