Hello,

My mom arrived on May 8, 2023 so her 6 month would be November 8, 2023. To make sure we receive the results in time, I applied for her extension to stay here, submitted on September 21, 2023.

On Nov. 11, 2023, we received the update saying our application to stay in Canada is approved and that a document is sent by mail. That message also says "Validity Nov. 16, 2023". So I thought, that date is "valid from" date.
I then received the document and it says she must leave on November 16, 2023 which has already passed when we received it.

The date I requested when I applied for the extension is up to May of 2025. I have been trying to call IRCC but can not get through the line due to high volumes and automated machine answer.

Do we need to apply again? We have already done her medical with this application and it doesn't make sense that they only extend her stay for 8 days?
Please any info to help what to do next

She had to do the medical because stayed past the 6 months. You may have requested 2 years but that is a very long time for a TRV extension. She could have gotten 8 days you’ll need to verify but right not she is without status. What was the reason she needed to visit for 2 more years? How much personal savings did she show? What ties does she have in her home country? What is her home country?

The medical was requested in October, a month before her 6th month. It was requested because of her age, not because she stayed past 6 months.

She has been here multiple times and has never over stayed passed the 6 month mark and this is only the second time we have applied for her extension. The reasoning for it is because my dad passed away during covid and since we could not go home at that time due to lockdowns, we brought her here to spend time with us and seeing us for the first time after my dad passed. When I applied for her visa, I have included a letter explaining that we will be covering all her expenses and that the main reason for her visit is to reunite with family. We still have properties back home and the rest of her siblings are still there, with all intentions of going back.

We applied for her extension so she can visit my sister in Alberta, so the plan was 6 months here in Ontario then apply for extension so she can go to Alberta for my sister. Since she's been here many times before, the intent is not to "tour" the country but to be with family after a death. All these was also explained in a letter to support the application for the extension.

She needs to apply to restore her status if the extension was only until Nov 16th. She is now out of status in Canada. Don't request an extension until 2025. This is too long and may be part of the reason she was given such a short extension. Ask for a year max

Once she stayed one day past the 6 month she would still be required to complete the medical if requested is what I was saying. Having to repeat a medical isn’t related to length of extension. Agree that your request for 2 years was too long. If she was only planning on visiting for 6 more months why did you ask for 2 years? As already indicated she needs to apply to restore her status and then try to secure a longer stay. The fact that your mother is a recent widow and that you requested such a long stay was likely problematic. I assume there is a good chance your letter may have created concerns as well. You may have tried to explain that you were trying to support your mother after the loss of your father but your letter may have been filled with red flags for a VO. Things like covering all her costs when IRCC wants to see visitors able to cover their own costs, underlining that both children live in Canada and she is a widow (her siblings don’t count as ties), being able to leave for a year reinforces that her ties to her home country are not very strong, etc. Many people end up hurting their applications with what they include in their letters

Hi, the same happen with my sister. We have been studying here in Canada, but since we want to travel our passport does not allow us to come back so we need to apply for visitor canadian visa to be able to come back (our previous visa expired during COVID). I applied for me and my sis, I received my visitor visa until my biometric expiration date (in 2029), BUT my sis didn't have biometric before so she did it this time. Mine got approved almost instantly cuz I already had it, and I sent my passport with the letter as they requested. My sis did her biometric in the meantime and then we were waiting for her approval. Just now we got the confirmation, but it says it will expire in Sept of this year 2024 (it was only extended less than 6 months), like it doesn't make sense, her student permit expire in 2026, her biometrics were done recently so it expired in 2034, and both our passport expire in 2030... We didn't know what were the prerequisites or requirements to get a longer Visitor Visa extension? Why was mine approved just fine for a while, while her will expire in such a short amount of time?? I applied for my other family members as well and they got a pretty long time extension cuz of their recent passport renewal. But why did my sis only got 6 months??

Hi there,

So apparently, the way they give the days, weeks or months is kinda random. I have an aunt who also applied for an extension and she said that she gets 3 months, sometimes 6 months (she applied multiple times during covid coz she can't go home) so it looks like there is no set number of days even if you requested a specific date, its still up to the officer reviewing the account. For my mom though, I had to ask the help of our MP to figure out what happened as the IRCC made the decision without receiving the health exam that they requested. They eventually fixed my mom's status but they never admitted the mistake and just made it look like we got approved based on their own review and checking. It may be helpful to get help from a government body that knows or helps with students. Best of luck!
