Canada has Indian diplomats' communications in bombshell murder probe: sources

The Canadian government has amassed both human and signals intelligence in a months-long investigation of a Sikh activist's death that has inflamed relations with India, sources tell CBC News.

That intelligence includes communications involving Indian officials themselves, including Indian diplomats present in Canada, say Canadian government sources.

The intelligence did not come solely from Canada. Some was provided by an unnamed ally in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

In a diplomatic crisis that unfolded progressively behind the scenes, Canadian officials went to India on several occasions seeking cooperation in the investigation of Hardeep Singh Nijjar's death.

The Sikh leader was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C. on June 18 and reportedly had been warned by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service that he was at risk.

Canada's National Security and Intelligence Adviser Jody Thomas was in India over four days in mid-August, then again for five days this month.

That last visit overlapped with a tense meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I can assure you that the decision to share these allegations on the floor of the House of Commons … was not done lightly," Trudeau said Thursday in New York after attending the United Nations General Assembly.

"It was done with the utmost seriousness."

My reaction reading this is "fuck me!". Work hard, do better, move to a new country - your identity comes back to haunt you. Last few days since this news came out didn't felt great, this was even worse. I have no words if this is true - the wording alone implies that this would be way too hard to dismiss. Indian immigrants are in a way now royally fucked.

Was watching this interview (wasting my life and energy on this shit) where Terry Milweski said that India could've countered with the evidence presented to them, but India hasn't - which implies Canada may not be wrong here:

Maybe it is time for everyone to just take a minute and think why they are in this forum.
It maybe for,
  1. The Canadian dream
  2. International exposure/career
  3. Western lifestyle
  4. Fleeing persecution/oppression/conflict
  5. Running from poor socio-economic conditions
Whatever be your reason, you made it to Canada. Like any other country on the planet it is not perfect, far from it. But it is us who made the choice to immigrate. For every single one of us there are 100s who will take the our place with more gratitude. There is no shortage of skilled desperate people.

Let us not bring the problems from the countries that we chose to leave. If you feel it was better (system, politicians, government, economy, career, society) back there, it is still in your hands to go back.

If all these allegations and shit slinging is to be believed then imo Canada has approached this is the a very mature manner.

I remember Turkey quickly if not immediately released CCTV footage of Jamal walking into the consulate. Of the planes. Of the killers. Saudis were caught in a complete bind!

If and it seems like they did, JT and the national security lady try to persuade cooperation with India before coming out in public, Canada has managed this situation very maturely. This murder happened in June if I'm not wrong.

I am extremely anti JT but suddenly he seems to have a very mature manner of handling things.

And India hasn't directly responded to the allegations yet. Lot of deflection and whataboutery. Not seeing this from JT.

Holy shit. Is JT popular again? :(

Whats new here? Same BS. "We have intelligence!" "but it will never be made public! And you are the murder!". "Unnamed ally": nice fig leaf! No one will say "I provided" or "I did not provide".

Since JT has bet the proverbial farm here, there is no other option but entire government to double down.

If they really had intelligence, they should have charged those perps in court of law and then asked for extradition of people involved and sanctions on India. Right now, its all Canada's game.

I mean listen to US officials. They are also repeating exact same words that John Kirby said.

"We have not rebuffed Canada. Canada should do its police investigation. India should co-operate."

I don't understand why India thinks it's a winning move to stop issuing visas to Canadians. The overwhelming majority of those applying will be naturalised indian-canadians.

This flex from Modi won't end well. Should Canada decide to retaliate, Indians would be the ones getting the short end of the stick.
Its not a winning move from what I can see. Indian diplomat was named by Canadian authorities before being expelled. This is simply way beyond insulting, it is dangerous. The person is now a targetted person with his family all the life. India had to retaliate. There could be something else as well but naming a person being expelled during a probable extrajudicial murder case is a great way of ensuring that he and his family ends up ... not in a good place to be honest.

THERE IS EVIDENCE.

Okay, apologies for that headline.

From reddit:

The official, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, revealed that the U.S. also has discussed the matter with the highest levels of the Indian government.

He said the U.S. is deeply concerned and wants to see the investigation continue and the perpetrators brought to justice.

He insisted that U.S. interest in this case will not disappear simply because it involves India, a powerful democracy with which it craves closer ties.

"It is something we take seriously. It is something we will keep working on. And we will do that regardless of the country," said Sullivan.

"There's not some special exemption you get for actions like this. Regardless of the country, we will stand up and defend our basic principles."

He also aggressively pushed back on media reports suggesting that the U.S. had declined to defend Canada on the matter.

"I have seen in the press some efforts to try to drive a wedge between the U.S. and Canada on this issue. I firmly reject that there is a wedge between the U.S. and Canada," he said.”

Also, the Canadians have united. Hard to believe but right now many are posting comments like" why are the Indian bots silent? Because its 4am in India" and "my eyes were opened to the radical nationalism fever in Indians due to this"

JT is winning sympathy and popularity.

Exactly. No actual evidence was provided obviously but it is clear he has US support to some level, chances are US probably found this evidence and gave it to CSIS. Fact that Jake Sullivan is the one to espouse support is huge. This is the guy that was warning everyone of Russian evasion weeks before they did. He's in the know.

Yeah. Someone said it here that as daft as Trudeau can be, Canada is still following the process.

This is Modi's MBS moment.

What did the Saudis do? Diplomatic and trade ties were cut with Turkey.
I was in Saudi at the time, Saudi customs refused and detained all Turkish cargo arbitrarily and all Trade was unofficially yet completely suspended till very recently. Visas were denied, businesses were forced to shut down. Travel warning, etc.
Essentially exactly what India has done so far.

Unbelievable that Canadians are uniting. As a Canadian PR, I'm proud that this country is standing up for something, anything lol

Modi will spin this issue to his favor in India. He doesn’t care about Canadian Indians. Next year, he is up for re election. He may win or lose the majority by few seats. So he will use every issue to his favor.!!! Thats his end goal.

Jaishankar… being a former diplomat, he thought like a diplomat and forgot that he is the External Affairs minister.

Comments such as "I detest JT and how he has screwed Canada but I stand behind him for this one" are everywhere on the Interwebs.
"I know he's trying to create a distraction from his Chinese meddling and probably some upcoming scandal but I stand with him 100%"

The troll army isn't making anything better. Trolling unexpecting Canadian social media left and right. This really picked up the attention of the local Canadian after the visa ban.
Even in my office which is all Conservative leaning and where world affair is the last place to reach imo.

Lets face it man.

A guy who:
1. Came to Canada on a false passport.
2. Got his refugee claim rejected on a cock and bull story.
3. Did a false marriage for PR.
4. Lied on immigration docs and got caught.
5. Lost the judicial review.
6. Declared most wanted in India and has a red corner notice.

He gets to
1. stick around in Canada.
2. Becomes a citizen. (funnily, his date of becoming a citizen got mis reported by Canadian Minister! An error of 8 years.)
3. Meets Canadian spooks regularly (sometimes twice a week).

Who do you think he is? How do you think he even got a PCC?

This is not a normal everyday guy. Its clear its not just Canadian public government has favourites. There are favourites among deep state/spooks as well.

Another fun fact, I heard from a lot of Canadians that spooks here do not report to Canadian civil government. They are autonomous and have significant freedom. Who do you think they really work for then? I am sure as hell it is NOT only for Canada.

Do remember, when it comes to being citizen here, its going to be a tiered system. All Canadians are equal. Some will be more equal.

Nothing new. I guess the new boss is same as old one.
