Hello,

I was working and living in Ontario earlier but I recently moved to Alberta. I continue to work for my employer in Ontario remotely and at times in person. My Primary residence is in Alberta. So do I put the Alberta address in my citizenship application or my (friend's) old Ontario one. Would it be an issue when my residence is AB but workplace is ON?

Any inputs will be greatly helpful.

Thank you.

Use your Alberta address. Remote working is pretty common these days. So no issues.

You need to give your actual current address.

Just be advised that they use employment address to verify your physical presence. Since you work remotely from another province, this doesn't help and could be an issue. Include a letter of explanation which explains that you work remotely. Just in case, obtain a letter from your employer and documents proving your residence in Alberta, in case it is ever required.

@forw.jane and @johnjkjk

Thank you for your inputs. I think physical presence is can be verified by CBSA records and CRA (records for filing taxes). I did not get my PR through PNP so I am not bound to live in ON. My only concern is which province should I be paying taxes in later? I would be moving in September and will be living with buddies. Hoping to close on a house by the end of this year, but I will be travelling back and forth to ON.

Do I also update my AB address with CRA or leave it as is?

Use your AB address for your application. Update your address to AB with CRA as it’s your residence. You will probably file in Alberta at the end of the year because it asks which province you were living in at the end of the year. Sounds to me like you’d say Alberta but you can search up residence ties and what makes it Alberta over Ontario in your situation.

(I also moved from AB to ON and back to AB in a year)

and OP will pay less tax in AB so I would definitely do that :)

They may also use employment history to verify physical presence. So just be prepared for the worst case scenario of needing to prove it.

Did you move back to AB from ON within the same
fiscal year?
