Child Care benefits for new comers on work permit

Hi All,

I came to Canada on June 2016 on a work permit ( Intra company transfer) with my wife a 2 year old kid.

As of Jun 2017 I have a SIN number and filled my income tax returns for year 2016. My wife does not have a SIN number.

My doubts are :
1/. What all steps do I have to do to apply for Canada child benefit.
2/. Do I have to apply for SIN for my wife.
3/. Do I have to file ITR for year 2016 for her.
4/. When can I expect to get CCB.

Any help or direction would be really helpful.

Are you eligible?

To be eligible for the Canada child benefit (CCB), you must meet all of the following conditions:

• You must live with the child, and the child must be under 18 years of age.
• You must be primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child.
• You must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes.
• You or your spouse or common-law partner must be:
  • a Canadian citizen
  • a permanent resident
  • a protected person
  • a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months, and who has a valid permit in the 19th month

As shown above, you have another 6-7 months to wait before you qualify.

My son and I are currently in canada and my wife is in Jordan waiting for her PR to finish... i wanted to start CCB but they are asking for a social insurance number for my wife, which she doesnt have... what should i do?

I have read tht we need to reside minimum of 18mos. Question is, do we receive a LUMP-SUM of the CCB from the date of landing (DEC 2018), or the start of the CBB will be from our 19th month?

Following this thread. Where do they count the 18mos? From the primary applicants nomination (PNP) or from the arrival of the kids? Pls advise

Both parents have to be 18 months or one of them will do?

That is will he considered as International student or Inland student?

Your son needs to apply for a study permit and will be considered an international student and will have to pay international student fees. You only qualify for child benefit payments after 18 months on a WP and I assume that after 18 months your child will be over 18 so you will never receive any child benefit for him.

He's too old and won't qualify for any benefits.

As said above, he'll need a study permit and will need to pay international student fees.

Pulling this thread, we are temp residents here in Canada completing 18 months in end of Mar'23. Both me and my wife have submitted tax returns for last 2 years.
I was told there is about 8 weeks application process timelines, When can I start my CCB application ?

You can submit the application as soon as you've completed your 18 months in Canada. So the earliest you can submit is in the 19th month. Don't apply earlier. The application will be turned down.
