So this is what we will be pledging allegiance to

If it makes OP feel any better, the deceased monarch paid all her palace servants very poorly.

Monarchs tend to be popular, but that has more to do with the position they hold than their intrinsic qualities.

That being said, and others have said so already, please pronounce the oath exactly as IRCC asks you. It's just an obligatory rite of passage, dont think too much about it.

France is a republic, right? Overturned monarch 6 times? My hat's off to the French.

As long at the Monarch is the Head of State in Canada, those taking Oath have no choice but to swear allegiance to the Monarch, in this case KC III. Whether one likes Charles / William / George or Elizabeth, it is what it is.

Anyone cribbing about allegiance to a monarch knew what they were getting into before mailing the citizenship application. Right?
My personal guess is that very few know what pledging allegiance to the monarch or the crown actually means.

https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/crown-canada/about.html#a1
"[QEII now KCIII] is the personal embodiment of the Crown in Canada.

In Canada’s system of government, the power to govern is vested in the Crown but is entrusted to the government to exercise on behalf and in the interest of the people. The Crown reminds the government of the day that the source of the power to govern rests elsewhere and that it is only given to them for a limited duration."

My italics. The oath is not to the 'individual', but the individual-in-office i.e. to the monarch (the Crown) [or if you prefer the monarch / crown in the context of the Constitution.] You're also not pledging allegiance to Trudeau, or any particular government, or whatever other thing-you-don't-like.

Bad History Take #1,346: at least two of the French republics were overturning previous republics, not monarchs.

You could interpret any way you like, but it's not a sign of being good at overturning monarchies, nor of establishing stable forms of government.

why would you make your life difficult and risk your grant of citizenship for something that you were well aware you would have to do. Like it or not Canada is a sovereign nation and King Charles III is now the sovereign. if you don't want to say King Charles III's name maybe don't take the oath until the Prince of Wales accedes the throne. This is ridiculous and really not a serious question, your comment regarding 'skipping Charles and going straight to William' shows your ignorance of the Monarchy and process. Suck it up or don't take the Oath!

Read a short piece praising the monarchy in practice, the argument came down to this: people are going to argue and get blue in the face and write internet screeds about useless crap and invest all of their personal identities in random celebrities and 'government' anyway, better they do it about a symbolic figurehead that investing all that emotional energy in the personalities in government, that way lies madness.

This thread at times convincing me that argument has some merits.

Relax, I'm sure you've seen way bigger jabs at the queen in the past few days. It's not that important :)

The only thing that matters in the whole thread is to just go along with that oath IRCC asks people to recite, at least as long as the citizenship act requires this.

Just a final update. Despite everything, I said the revised oath as instructed. However, I was pleased to see that both my citizenship certificate and my Canadian passport still refer to Queen Elizabeth.

Now that you mention it, it IS a possibility. This is a 10-year passport, and Charles is 73 years old. If I don't travel much, it is possible.

But it wouldn't matter if I had to renew it while Charles is king. I am still glad that my certificate and my first passport refer to the Queen.
