Hi All im currently doing an Outland family sponsorship and finally got my AOR after nearly 5 months. I’m extending my stay by applying through the proper channels. My question is, if I needed to Return to the US for a family emergency would I be allowed back into Canada? I’ve read conflicting reports, some people say I would be denied entry because leaving cancels the extension. Others say it’s ok because I’m legally here in Canada, can someone please clarify? Many thanks

Your entry will be assessed like any new arrival to Canada. You could be asked about your ties to the US like job, home, etc. because you are trying to enter to visit Canada. It is really unpredictable. As soon as you leave any extension request is no longer valid so you should inform IRCC that you’ve left Canada.

Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
Are you a U.S. citizen? If so, did CBSA give you have a visitor record? If so, is that what you are extending?

You may have legal status in Canada, now...but, once a person leaves Canada, it usually means that you will be re-examined/assessed by CBSA all over again when you seek re-entry.

With a sponsorship application in process, along with some proof of ties to your home country (US of Eh?), your chances of being allowed to re-enter would seem to be high, but...never a guarantee.

Yes I’m a US citizen. After 6 months here I’ll apply for an extension, but just wanted to know how it works if I needed to go back to the US to see my sick dad. thank you for the replies. It seems so risky and seems to depends on the mood of the border guard.

My personal opinion - others have rightfully pointed out that doing this is not without risk.

BUT: with a US passport if you go for not excessively long and return with that explanation, that you already have AOR, I rather doubt you would be denied entry.

Also good you are only going for one trip and not constantly back and forth.

Most people have no issues if they are only crossing once. You are much more likely to encounter issues if you cross many times. If your father is I’ll wouldn’t let the possibility that you may encounter issues prevent you from going for a visit.
