This summer for a couple days everyone up here in Elliot Lake went around going "Boy it's a scorcher!" while I stood there thinking, "Really?!" We turned the A/C on for a couple hours one day, debated and decided, "Nah, don't need it!" On the morning we left for a trip down to Toronto, I was doing jumping jacks to stay warm while waiting for the bus as my breath frosted on the air. In August. :-X
Haha exactly!

Summer in Canada so far has been disappointing. From what I understand, we got an outstanding summer this year in Calgary and it was awful..... Had to wear a hoodie in August. Wth?
Wow....you guys are a tough sell....lol
This past summer was terrific....hot (by Canadian standards), very little rain, lots of sunshine....in Southern Ontario at least.
CharlieD10 if you are in Elliot Lake you are in for a loooong cold winter with lots of snow. Hope you like ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and curling....lol
I was born in Sudbury (couple hours east of Elliot Lake) and lived there for 24 years before heading to southern Ontario.

Yep, I be here. It's currently so foggy outside I can barely see my neighbour's lights across the street. The weather is calling for snow again on Thursday, but for right now the snow we got last week is mostly melted into salty, slushy puddles. I didn't like fishing in the lovely, warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, I can't promise I'll like ice-fishing. I am excited to go snowmobiling and downhill skiing, cross-country I don't know about. As for curling...well. ???

I go to Suds on the weekend for a class. It isn't that I don't like the city, it's nice to have a full mall to shop in, but the two hour drive is killing me, lol.

I bet the drive is killing you. Do you have to do this all winter? Is the class at the university? i am an alumni of Laurentian. The shopping has improved a lot since I left. The New Sudbury Shopping Centre was about it when I left. Lots of the big box stores now though out on the Kingsway.

I've only gotten through 2 pages but this is definitely my favorite thread ever. The stories are funny and touching and even informative. I'm so glad I found this forum.

I don't have any great stories yet but I will. My husband is Mexican and grew up in Bakersfield. It's 105 easy in the summer and hotter. If I had a penny for every time he said the word cold - I'd be rich. And it's not even that cold yet. The coldest was two days ago when it was 22 F.

Fortunately, no. It's done in two weeks, thank heaven.

Good deal. That is not a 2 hour drive you want to be making all winter.

What a lovely thread 8)

I've lived in Southern California most of my life where when the temp goes below 60 degrees F people will tell you they are "freezing" lol. I moved to Michigan 6 1/2 years ago. It was either my second or possibly 3rd winter here that I skidded on ice while driving on an interstate highway. Thankfully there was no one driving next to me at the time as I spun 2 full revolutions (on my wheels) and then faced the opposite direction. My DH told me it was what I needed to happen to teach me to respect the ice. True.

About layering. My hubby says that for all my layering to walk 5 steps out the door to a warm truck, and then 10 more steps to the restaurant (or wherever we are going) is senseless. For those few steps I'm "just right" but then the rest of the time I have to shuck off layers of coat/scarf/sweater/gloves, put it on for the 10 steps, and take them off again. He says "Why not just put up with it without all that stuff on, for just a couple of minutes, and you'll be comfortable the rest of the time?" ... ::) I dunno, I might freeze to death during those 5 or 10 steps. ;D

I just got around to reading this fantastic thread. I've lived here 17 years and still learned stuff! I layer! I wore something like six shirts one day last week and I'm never caught without long underwear on a cold day. Y'all (sponsored peeps) will make great additions to Canada if you can talk about the weather for 8 pages! :p

I always say to my friends, "I rather be overly dressed than "underdressed" at any time of the day. Looks like I'm not alone :p

My fiance is very conscious of appearances (both for himself and for me) and was getting very fedup with my layering method to keep warm.. so last Christmas he gave me a couple of hundy to buy my own coat :p ended getting a Le Chateau puffer with 1 inner zipper and an overall zipper on the outside. Love it to pieces! He said I look much better that way too.

Our entire hallway closet is fully dominated by my jackets and coats.. hahaha! My excuse is, I don't drive.. take public transport, so I need things with different thickness for different temperatures. He drives, so he doesn't need as much (and not forgetting he's originally from Regina).

I prefer cold to extreme heat. You can always bundle up (or stay inside by the fireplace) but there's only so much you can take off. My favorite times of the year are the spring and the fall. I love the fall colors in the trees and for wardrobe choices, rust, oranges, muted avocado shades of green, etc ;)

When I moved back last year I heard on the radio that the reason Canadians moan about the weather is because there's nothing else to moan about! It made me smile because it's something my Grampa used to say when I was a kid!!
My man is obviously getting used to the temperatures because yesterday he said 'ooh the weather is getting right up to -5 today'!!

The bus stop is the coldest place on the planet, especially when the bus is stuck at a red light two blocks away.
