I am a Canadian national and am enquiring on behalf of a friend of mine who has a tourist visa approved.

Is there any mechanism in place to stop people working whilst on a tourist visa? Bank income checks etc?

She'd be traveling and only want to work for 2 months or so to finance some of her visit.

I wouldn't encourage her to break the law but I she feels she can work cash in hand for a few weeks whilst here is there anything stopping her?

I'd like her to visit in the future so don't want her to have any problems with immigration.

Thanks very much -

You probably know the answer of your question.

If it says "no work allowed" under a tourist visa, this is what it means. The reasons are, tourists can undermine the already difficult job market by asking lower wages and taking jobs a Canadian is entitled to.

However, your friend would have to be reported to CIC as working under a tourist visa, and even if this happens, CIC may turn a blind eye on her.

Thanks very much.

I guess I'm more enquiring as to the possibility of her being caught than being able to work though?

So regardless of being aware of laws etc. if one can get away with something it's okay if there's little chance of being caught.

Let's try that again looking at any other Act of Parliament and respect for a democratic country's law.

As a general rule, those of us on this forum do not offer support or advice to those who are planning on taking illegal actions.

It's the actions of people such as your friend who have increased waiting times, increased red tape, increased refusals for tourist visas for genuine tourists, and generally made the process far more long and difficult for all of us who are taking the legal route.

Thanks - appreciate your time. It's her call to make at the end of the day but I will advise her accordingly.

If she wants to work, why doesn't she do it legally by obtaining a work permit? She will need a job offer, labor market opinion and will have to submit her application to a visa office outside Canada e.g Buffalo, New York or go to the border.
