Is this for an inland application? And if so, did you include the OWP (open work permit) application with your original application?

Yes it is an inland application. I didn't include the work permit application with my original H&C grounds, my application was approved and the letter state I can now apply for work permit.

Canada has a “Canadians first” policy for the labor market. It means that if a Canadian can be hired for the job, a work permit for a foreign worker will not generally be issued. On the other hand, it is acknowledged that certain occupations are in demand throughout the country, and employers as well as workers trying to get a work permit for these occupations will have a much easier time.

Just to clarify, what kind of application are you referring to for work permit? Please specify since the timeline to process varies from case to case.

Basically it depends on the timeliness of the required work permit documentation. Work permit can be issued in a matter of days. The time taken to process a work permit vary depending on the work permit candidate, the employer of the work permit candidate and the employment details.

This is an open work permit based on a spousal inland application that's received AIP. There is no employer or employment details. (This information is irrelevant since this is an OPEN work permit.)

Susan18 -

I believe I've read that processing times are around 45 days if the OWP application wasn't submitted with the application. However I'm not certain. Your best source for this information would be one of the Inland threads on this forum. I would try the 2010 Inland thread (link provided below). I'm sure they'll be able to help.

You may also visit russweninger.com or calgarylegalwills.com. Significant complexity may surround the process of securing the proper authorization to work. Hope the following link can help you.

I was asking myself the same question! I also sent my application INLAND without my work permit because back then I had my valid work permit and I didn't think I would have problems renewing it. Anyhow I've seeing many people getting the second stage approved just a month or so after the first stage and I wonder if it's wise to send the work permit application at all. It's $150 and for a young couple that one person is not working it is a lot of money... I don't know if it's worth it...

If you send in your work permit application and are landed prior to it being reviewed you could request a refund if the application has not been opened and review started

One person in the 2011 inland thread applied online after AIP was granted and got their OWP in 5 days. Not saying all cases are like that, but the online route seems the best.

I was told to submit my OWP with my INLAND PR application by one of the CIC agents. It is supposed to prevent delays in processing once they give you the AIP. Still at this point after reading through thousands of posts there doesn't seem to be any general rule on a timeline as to when you can expect your open work permit after you have your AIP. If anyone has further details please advise us all. Sounds like everyone is just as confused as I am about all this.
Thankyou
