Work Permit while waiting for PR Stage 1?

Hi guys!

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a very confusing topic. Was trying to find the answer on CIC, but it was quite confusing.
I will explain: right now I have an open work permit, which is valid for another 7 months.
Before it expires, me and my SO want to apply for common law sponsorship (we can apply a month before it expires).
My questions are:
1. How long does it take for my sponsor to get approved (Stage 1), and which path should be faster (inland or outland)?
2. Is it possible to extend my open work permit, for the period *before* the sponsor is approved(or maybe the implied status that I get while waiting allows me to work - since the previous status was an open work permit)?
I also already know that to get the OWP after Stage 1, I should apply for it with the PR application.

I hope it makes sense.
Thanks guys!

Hi

Posted processing times:

Outland: 44 days + 10 months = 11.5 months

The 10 months is not an average. It's how long it took to process 80% of apps, meaning that 79% are done faster than that.

Inland: 14 months + 8 months = 22 months

CIC is currently working on apps from August 20th, 2013, so first stage is actually over 15 months right now.

Do you currently hold a PGWP?

Yes, I currently hold a PGWP, it expires in 7 months.

I am aware of the time gaps, and of the fact that inland is slower.

But if I menage to find a way to work here while waiting for stage 1, it will not be an issue.

If doing the outland route, I most likely will have to go home for 10 months (maybe a bit less), and leave my SO here - I don't want that.

From what I found, it seems that if one is on implied status after PGWP expired (and one has submitted PR + application for OWP), one can continue working under same conditions of the PGWP.

I found no written proof of CIC telling its not the case, and I did find some threads on this forum where the government confirmed it, by a letter.

Can you tell me anything on the matter? And maybe provide some official info on it?

Thank you so much!

You don't have to leave Canada to file an outland app. You can change your status to visitor and remain here while the app processes.

As for being able to continue to work while on Implied Status if you submit an inland PR/OWP package, it's a grey area on the forum. Many think that you can, many think that you can't. There is nothing official posted by CIC. It basically comes down to you deciding whether to risk that it is allowed and continue working or to play it safe and stop working.
