Hi there,
Does having a letter of employment speed up the process of obtaining an IEC work permit?
Thanks

No - if anything, it would be an additional thing for them to verify and might add time.

It is one of the quickest permits to be processed, for a straightforward application it usually takes about 4 weeks at the moment.

Thank you, so can I put a scenario to you?
If she is in the IEC pools but hasn't been picked yet to apply for a visa, is it better/quicker for her to withdraw her profile from the pools and have a letter of employment to apply for a work visa?

No, IEC is the best bet. Stay in the pool.

To apply for a straight up work permit, she needs a letter of offer and an LMIA (employer needs to advertise the role for more than one month and meet other requirements). That whole process can take over 6 months and she would be tied to that one employer. With IEC she can work and travel pretty well anywhere.

Ok fantastic, thank you so much. She's really worried about getting knocked back at the border, I'm trying to make her feel better as she has over $10,000 she's been saving for the last 18 months and 6 months of health/travel insurance and is staying with a friend so won't have the accommodation expenses of a standard traveller and absolutely no intentions of staying longer than she legally can or working without a permit, but she has heard so many stories, that's she's worried that she either won't be allowed to come or won't be allowed to come for the 6 months. She is in the pools and it's possible that she will get the letter to apply for a permit while she's there, and if she does that's great, but if not, she can support herself for at least 6 months so should be ok, but she's just stressed !! Do you have any suggestions as to what she can do to batter her chances? or is it the luck of the draw once she get to the Border?

She will be just fine, I've had heaps of friends do the exact same thing. The Canadian immigration guys are really friendly, just be upfront.

PRINT all of the documents, they often don't let you have electronics where most of the processing happens.

I'd recommend that she have:

Bank statement
Letter from the friend confirming the offer of accommodation
Travel insurance

Thank you so much, her friend will actually be waiting there to pick her up, they could speak to him if they need to, but I'll see if she can get him to write something. I think this will help her be a little less stressed !! Thank you again, we appreciate the time you have taken to help. :)

Hi Deb62,

How long have you guys been waiting for the letter of invitation? I saw you guys had withdrawn your application and reapplied?

I did the same thing and have been waiting since march 9th for an invitation for the IEC.

Hi NJC, my daughter had to wait about 20 days for the error to be fixed, then she was able to re apply to enter the pools. She is currently in Canada on an eTA, staying with a friend, has plenty of funds to support herself and also 6 months health insurance. She is hoping she gets a letter of Invitation to apply for a work permit, apparently it can take a few weeks, she's been waiting since the 8th of March and still not received anything, however, her trip to Canada is not dependant on her getting a work permit, she is fully prepared to leave at the end of the 6 months if she doesn't receive the work permit, a work permit will just allow her to stay a bit longer with the friend that she's staying with. We have read it can take up to 8 weeks for the work permit to ne issued, I was about to post another question to see if, once she gets the letter to apply, can she go to the border and get the permit there?or does she have to apply online and wait?

Once she gets the invitation, she has to submit all of the required documents online. Then she will have to wait some more for the application to be approved (this is the 8 weeks you have been hearing about - although I'm not sure it takes this long for everyone). Only once the application is approved would she go to the border to trigger the work permit.

Thank you Scylla, I hope CIC pay you !!! They should because you are always so helpful !! My daughter came to Vancouver on Friday, was totally honest and got through the border without any problems. I really think the people who have problems at the border are maybe trying to be a bit dicey or don't do their research for the correct visa's etc and that's why we hear so many horror border stories. All I can advise is be honest and don't try to stay/work without the right paperwork and permissions. Cheers :D

I've been waiting since March 10th! It said they would send out 20,000 work permits this April starting today as they send them on Mondays! So hopefully they'll come through soon!
