My husband is in Canada currently on a post-graduate work permit that cannot be extended any further. It expires in late July of 2013 but we're planning to file our application April 1st. Would they extend his work permit for the purpose of this application?

Any help is appreciated! :)

are you applying inland or outland?

if you're applying outland (which can be done even if your husband is in Canada), then no.
If you're applying inland, I'm not sure... as the current permit can not be extended, I don't think so. But you can include an Open Work Permit application with your (inland) application, and your husband will be allowed to stay passed his work permit. he won't be able to work until the stage 1 is approved though (6 months from filing more or less). Which wouldn't be too bad... if you file in April, and his permit expires in July, he would have 2 months without a work permit ( where he can stay in Canada on implied status), and then get a work permit once you get the first stage approved.

If you're outland, your husband won't get implied status, if he is from a visa-exempt country he can change from his current work permit to a visitor status, and wait out without working.
Good luck,
Sweden

Actually, if applying via the In Canada Class the answer is YES as long as an Open Work Permit application is included WITH the sponsorship and PR application package and the fees are paid. It's not an extension. It's an Application for a CHANGE of Conditions. It keeps him on implied status until a decision is reached on the new WP application.
