I am from country which has travel visa exemption (Portugal). I have positiv LMO and employment contract.
can I apply for a temporary work permit at the border port-of entry, do you need a medical exam, a police record or other documents before going to the border. What are the other documents I have to carry to produce to the immigration officers at the port of entry?

Hi there, I am from Portugal too. Have been in Canada for a very long time.
I wanted to let you know that since your LMO was approved you dont really need to apply for a work permit. You will have to show that positive answer at the airport border and they process your work permit on the spot. Thats what they did to me in 2009. So thats my experience.

Take care

You do have to fill out the work permit application form, pay $150, have proof you meet job requirements(CV, degree or diploma, training certificates as required for the job) and all other items on checklist, whether you do it at the border or online.
As well, if the job involves interaction with the public(e.g. healthcare, childcare, etc) you must also undergo an immigration medical exam and take the fee receipt as proof.

No, if you apply at a Port of Entry you don't complete the IMM 1295 beforehand, the IO does it on line when you arrive.

The checklist is IMM5488E. It is advisable you complete IM1295 before you get there. One it says it as a requirement on the checklist and two the officer uses it to fill out whatever he fills out when he goes to make your work permit.

If you read the instructions the IMM 5488 is if you are applying at an overseas office not a port of entry.

Quick question -

My wife is a Medical doctor and she got a job in Alberta. She is from a visa exempt country - UK and a US Green Card owner.

Her employer has applied for LMO... for 1 year.

Does she need to apply at the border or at a visa office ( heard visa office if the job is more than 6 months)?

Thanks

Also, does she need a police clearance certificate from UK and US?

She can apply at the border being visa-exempt to Canada. If she will be working in healthcare, she must undergo an immigration medical exam as well.

Applying at the port of entry is considered as applying from outside Canada.
