Dear Friends,

As improving IELTS score is the only hope , Looking forward to explore all option in doing same.

Appreciate if some one help me understanding how words are counted in essay's ? one of my friends told me that examiner counts all common words only once. please share if its true ?

is it true all ( a, an , the , if , is, are , so ......) counted only once ?

Also if its the rule then is there a way to judge during exam the word count other than counting it literally.

Thanks
RR

All the words are counted! The check how broad your vocabulary is. If u use same words again and again it may go against u

look at a few examples to get an understanding of how many sentences are used in task 1 and task 2 respectively. apply the same concept literally. I don't think you should go about counting words or prepositions.

Stop counting words. Focus on the content of your writing. Make sure you are conveying accurately. Use a variety of words. For example, good, nice, great, extra-ordinary, fabulous etc. instead of using good everywhere. If you keep inserting a, an, the etc. just to make your count go up, you will actually lose points for grammar.

I managed to get a 7 with incomplete task 1. I only ended up writing 120 words instead of 150. However, I managed to complete all the tasks mentioned except the word count. I used a lot of synonyms.I wrote task 2 first so it was worth more points.

At the end of the day, they only look at your English language structure. They really do not care about your opinion. All they care is how well you can express it. Hope this helps!! Good luck!!

Last time I completed task 1 first so got less time for task 2. Seems I need to change strategies.

In my first 2 attempts I wrote task 1 first. Even though I completed both tasks I got 5.5 first and 6.5 in the next one.

third time I went for task 2 first, I made sure the essay was near perfect by using a lot of synonyms, proper sentence structure and had the right format etc. I started task 1 with 15 minutes left and knew I wouldn't finish it on time so I chose to highlights all the tasks that was mentioned in the letter like why I would suggest this book to my friend, where this book can be found etc.

Honestly, I did not expect to get a 7 this time either but got pretty lucky in the end. I had spent a lot of time with writing tasks during my practice sessions to understand the structure and how the scoring happens and I guess it paid off :)

Now I have been wondering what if I had completed task 1 would have I scored 7.5 or 8? Guess will have to take one more test to find out
