I'm going to go down to Montreal in July and stay as long as I can while we wait for my PR to be approved. We were wondering if it was possible for me to be added to my Husband's bank account? He uses BMO.

From what I hear, BMO might allow it. The only way to know for sure is to go and ask :) I know for a fact Scotiabank won't though.

Banks willingness to do this will often depend on how good a customer your husband is. Is his credit good? Has he been a long time loyal customer? Does he have banks accounts, investment accounts, credit cards etc with BMO?

I'm on my common law spouse's Scotiabank bank account. They wouldn't let you parker24?
They needed proof of address- I had a utility bill- and two pieces of id. It didn't matter that I am only a visitor.

Hope you get a good deal for the medical exam too! Let us know if you find a better price!

My case might be specific to me, but I added my husband on to my BMO as a joint owner some time ago. Helps with PR proof of relationship.
They didn't require him to be Canadian, but he DID have a student visa at the time, which is why they also allowed him to get a checking account =P

My husband has EXCELLENT credit and is an OUTSTANDING customer in my opinion. He puts a lot of money in their banks. We'll go and try.

Nope. They required my husband to show proof of PR, obviously he didn't have that. Or an OHIP card, didn't have that either. Must have just been a branch thing.

Really?! Wow. If you still want the account I suggest calling a few other branches. We called ahead and they explained what I would need. I'm American! I said, and they didn't seem to care.
BTW what's a OHIP card?

We applied for PR in January, and at that point my husband went to Scotiabank. They opened the account and got it ready but wouldn't activate it until he had some kind of status, something from Immigration. They wouldn't even allow me to add him to my account. Was the lack of status in Canada.

He was issued a Temporary Resident Permit and Work Permit 2 weeks ago and took them down there, they opened his account up with NO service fees due to him being a newcomer to Canada. They have been great...they keep calling him with all kinds of other new things that he's entitled to as well to start establishing credit.

Good luck, you might have to wait it out.

He was given a work permit, so he went down to OHIP, they gave him the card...but it doesn't start working until July, as there is a 3 month wait. So...work, but I hope you don't get hurt they might as well have said to him!!!

Maybe not, Scotiabank told my husband the same thing at his branch in northern ON.

We live in a small town, there's only two branches near us so doubtful it'll be different. Oh well, my husband can use my card if needed. As for OHIP, it's Ontario Heath Insurance Program aka health card :)

Have you spoken with the manager of your branch yet?

Yeah she said the same thing. He needs to show photo id with a Canadian Address. Sigh. Oh well. Like I said he can use my card whenever he needs to.

I really wish they'd be more consistent ::) Do you feel like opening an account at a different bank?

If only the other banks around here had nice people haha this is the third bank account I've opened. They are really nice. Royal Bank and BMO can kiss my backside :p They were RUDE as ever, so was TD bank (had to go there for my job a few times in the past) Ugh. My husband and I had issues with paying for his car loan, and Scotiabank helped us figure it out so we really like them. We'll hang in there for now and already plan on stick with SC for the long haul :)
