guys i need your help and information, my wife has been a PR since 2011, we traveled to her home country (costa rica) along with our child (born canadian) and when we were about to check in, we were told that her PR card had expired last year, and that she couldnt travel unless she had it renewed or had a travel document. please someone give me some advice on what to do ASAP, i am flipping out right now, my wife stayed behind with my son in Costa rica, and we want to get them back here as soon as possible.

Gary

She needs a PR Travel Document to return to Canada. Application is here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/travel-document/

She will need to mail the application and her passport to local visa office (I think in San Jose). They would then mail back her passport with Travel doc included. Whole process can take a couple weeks. If she can go in person the process could be quicker.

Agreed with the above. Fastest is to apply for a Travel Document. There's a chance it could be processed in less than a week - but I would be prepared for the possibility that it could take two.

Good luck.

thanks for the quick responses guys, so do i have to include all of these spporting documents listed? like marriage certificate, child birth certificate? Also, her PR card and passport have her maiden names, but she has it changed on her drivers license and everything else , is that going to be an issue for them ? and what am I suppose to do with the flight that i already paid for? is that money gone now? oh what a mess im so stressed out.... :(

Follow the directions for the PR Travel Document application exactly and processing should be smooth. The fact some of her ID has her maiden name and other ID has her married name shouldn't be an issue.

What happens with the flights is really up to the airline and the class of ticket you purchased. You may be able to rebook for free or for a fee - or the money may be lost. That's not something any of us can answer. You'll need to contact the airline you're traveling with.

Good luck.

So, no not "ALL" that are listed, the question reads "These may include . . . ". Use your own discretion, but be aware her application should PROVE that she meets her R.O. and yours also (if you are also a PR).

If she is living in canada then her PR Status is valid. Show proof of her living in canada. Job support status rental home or own home proof. Paying bills etc in her name. Credit card statements. Her relationhip proof with you such as marriage certificate etc is less relavent. She is independent PR herself.

As you have realised, the problem is that they will not let her board the plane without either a valid PR card, a PRTD or an ETA (and she cannot have an ETA as she is already PR).

The only alternative could be if she gets a US ESTA and a flight to the USA. She can disembark there and you pick her up by car and drive across the border. CBSA can check her PR status at the border and let her through - your problem is getting on any commercial carrier to Canada without the required paperwork.

Just suggesting an alternative.....

Renew it!!! ASAP
Costa Rica is a third world country, why would you leave her there?

She is with family there it's not like she is on her own on the streets , and she didn't want the baby to leave her so we made that decision I am not worried about their safety they are fine , I just want then back as soon as possible.

Yeah good point , if his wife have valid US entry visa. Then she just need to take flight to buffalo( I assume family live nearby Toronto) . Pick her up from airport in private car. But bring her landing paper(COPR). On the border just cross on car into Canada.

This is a good recommendation, also US might be "safer" than Costa Rica.

Seeing what's going on at the U.S. airports right now, despite the fact that she's not from an affected country, I'm not sure that's an alternative I'd really recommend.
