So it's too late since I already submitted my application with each section stapled. However now I have seen several people say on here not to use staples. Can someone tell me why this is the case like is it a stated rule somewhere? Will they return my application for staples?

It used to be stated right at the top of the instructions, however they removed that clause. SO I think people just err on the side of caution now.

No worries they won't send it back over that. But, the instruction guide does say "a paper clip will do" which insinuates no staples, I assume they removed the part that actually said "no staples" because I do remember seeing that.

I had certain sections stapled and they didn't return my application. It should be OK. They don't want things stapled because they photocopy everything and rearrange things (at least I think this is the reason).

The other reason is that staples are a pain to remove and can cause personal injury to the handler.

I don't think it's big enough of a deal for them to return the application. I overlooked the part of the guide where it said to put the barcode pages on top, so I just placed the barcode pages together with each form they were generated from. I got SA normally after a couple of months and the file is now being processed in London - it would've been completely ridiculous for them to send it back to be reordered, or for a few staples to be removed.

Thank you everyone. :) I used the staples to keep certain items together like birth certificates or copies of boarding passes so shouldn't be a big deal. I was trying to be helpful hahaha.

I think we need a Royal Commission to determine the effects of staples on immigration applications!

Maybe CANlii will show an appeal case where the applicants were rejected due to "copious use of staples in application". :P

I think they also don't want us to staple our supporting documents such as originals and photocopies.

I agree, and good luck

Back when I applied, the explanation given was that the request was based on security reasons, because their alarm would sound off when scanning the package. Which doesn't make sense, one can still use other metals that would cause the same outcome, e.g. a paper clip. I think zardoz's explanation (staples are a pain to remove, and can cause injury) is more like it.

They probably don't like staples because they scan entire application packages into their system, to have an electronic file on your case. This requires removal of staples, hence extra work.
We have used regular paperclips and had no issues.

I hope no one gets hurt taking mine apart. That seems like bad luck hahaha ;)
