Where do i start?
I come from a small country that is considered by most to be a success story in the region. However, being small and isolated, people tend to be very closed-minded, jealous, superficial, shallow and really everything you would despise. As an example, people who drive fancy German cars think the rules don't apply to them on the road, and so we have lots of terrible accidents on the road because of the reckless way people drive due to their arrogance.
Employers are exploitative, you work a lot and you get paid a pittance in salary, and get passed over for promotions due to office politics even when you are hardworking and others get promotions because they have connections. Politically, we have many problems because our society is divided along communal lines and despite being a democracy, our elections always devolve into people just voting for parties which represent their religious and ethnic community despite how corrupt they are. We also have significant risks associated with burglaries and property crimes which have only worsened over time. Religion also plays a big part in public life, and it's something i dislike because i believe in the separation of the state and religion, and i believe secularism is important so that people's religious practices don't impinge on your ability to live your life.
Opportunities are few and far between, and so much depends on who you know not how good your profile is for a job. Despite salaries being very low, the cost of living is high, comparable to a Western country. Infrastructure is terrible, and i'm often incensed by the lack of urban planning which has plagued the country, and so it's very often you'll see 2 way roads which are not even wide enough to be a 1 way road. This is all pretty hard for me to accept because i grew up somewhere with pretty good infrastructure. It's also a small country which is limited and there isn't much to see.
I want to move to Canada because it really is in many way the complete antithesis of where i'm from: it's clean, people are civilized, people are more cultured, open-minded and fair-minded, look at the world in a more sophisticated way, there are many more opportunities, it's a big country with lots to explore and enjoy, and the country has great infrastructure and amenities.
Will there be ups and downs? Sure. Will there be moments it lets me down? Undoubtedly. But i know Canada is a better suited country for me, and better matches my mindset and beliefs, and what i value in life.
