I did about 75-80% of the work (I am the sponsor), my husband did 15-20%, and our lawyer made it look pretty, lol.

I am the sponsor and did most of the work on the application. I told my husband what he had to get done (photos, medical exam, fingerprints/fbi cert) and told him what forms he needed to fill out. He even scanned the forms first and emailed them to me to double check. Good thing I did as he put my name down as the spouse on the additional family member form but then signed that he had no spouse.

I made sure everything was completed and assembled all the evidence (I had more than him). It wasn't because of language or time issues, I just wanted to make sure it got done right as I'd spent more time researching what was required.

The way the CIC words it, the sponsor is "supposed to" be taking the lead in the process. They don't tell the applicant what to do except to mail it to the sponsor. But it doesn't really matter. The person most capable of understanding the process should be the one to take the lead.

I am the applicant and I did most everything myself. The parts my sponsor did were at my urging. Like a lot of the people here, I am the most organized and thorough of the two of us. I am constantly doing research to improve my understanding of the process and I take initiative. I do not resent being the one to do this at all. If it gets done, its all good :)

Hmm, responses so far are all female applicants...
I'm noticing that pattern too LOL!
I also did most of the organising and gathering (the applicant and the female!) It seems its not a case of did the applicant or the sponsor do most of the work, its the man or the woman haha :)

Hey hey, some of us do our fair share.

In our case I did all of it. Absolutely everything, including ordering her tax return printout, etc. She signed on the dotted line, that was it. I did give her a synopsis of the sponsorship agreement, so she knew what she was signing. She hates paperwork, and I don't mind it as much.

I thought I - being the applicant - did most of the work.
My wife disagreed. So I think it was a draw ;)
No problem with that.

I did 95% of the work, I am the sponsor.

I think the better question is, Who did most of the work - husband or wife? My guess is in most cases it is the wife!

My wife has been very thankful that I put our application together. Being the Canadian in our family she turned to me, hoping I would know about the laws for immigration. My mother back home who wants us to move back ASAP told me that she just had to apply for a SIN card...yeah right!

Basically I told her what it was that I needed and she stepped up every single time. On her days off, she'd go downtown to get paperwork done, fingerprints for FBI and state security clearances even though she would rather be at home. We both saved money to pay for the fees as well as the medical. She has been great through all this, I must say.

I am the male and sponsor. The only thing I didn't do was the relationship note from her. Took her to the DR, and Police checks. I forwarded everyhting off to our lawyer. She does not understand the system as well as we do in Canada so makes sense for the individual who understands it best to get it done.

We sat down as a couple and filled out all of the forms together (while I was on vacation in his home country). We printed out most of our evidence together also. The only thing I (female sponsor) did myself was order the pics, because they are a lot cheaper to have printed up in Canada. When we were finished, I brought all the papers back to Canada, and mailed them off.

Okay, okay, maybe I take it back.

It seems that it depends on each couple as it should. The most organised one, or the one who understands the process the best has done most of the work.

Good on all of us for getting it done and hoping it all goes through smoothly.

;D

It has been so nice to read this thread. Although the process is totally frustrating, reading this shows that we are all normal couples trying to get the everyday stuff done!

I would say in our case it has been a 60-40 split for me, the sponsor. But as other people have mentioned, I think that is because I am more paper oriented and love those sticky notes!! We were lucky to be able to complete our application together when I was visiting. I had to do some prodding to get the stuff done - but it did get done. I think (in general) it is more a male/female thing than a sponsor/applicant thing.

We don't mind sharing the work and doing the running around because it will get us to our goal of finally being together. Look at it as a labour of love :)

I know I will be doing most of it as English is the third language of my fiance so I will be helping him with his end of the papers when I go to get married. But its ok with me as I am more info oriented than he is. He thinks they should just believe us...lol :p meanwhile I know enough now to know that is not the case for immigration.

I'm the applicant, (and male), and I'm doing most of it so far. but that's because most of what needs gathering up is my stuff. Having lived in 3 states since I turned 18 there's a few addresses and jobs to track down, plus police certs etc. Other things just worked out that way for, example I have Vonnage for my phone and you can access all your in and outgoing calls via their website so obviously I handled that :D She's hit up everyone we know there for any photos of us they might have, and support letters when the time comes.

Some things, such as the relationship history, we'll do together although I'll probably do the first draft and let her look it over and go from there.

And then we'll let the lawyer fine tune it all
