Hello everybody! My boyfriend and I were just wondering, for our case updates who receives them? The sponsor or applicant? Does CIC contact the applicant directly when they need the passport? Also, which is better, to include email or leave for everything in writing thru regular mail?

Thanks!

In my opinion email is better because it's faster and there is less risk to loose important papers.

CIC contacts the sponsor for the first part ( sponsor approval), and then the applicant for the second part (stage 2 in the visa office). After you get the sponsorship approval, you will have a file number that allows you to check on progresses on ecas - online system. Ecas is not very reliable and doesn't provide much information, but you can check it to see if anything is happening.

If you are from a visa-exempt country, then CIC might not request a passport, and not even the copy. It depends on the VO. If the VO requests the passport, the request will be sent ( generally by email) to the applicant, unless the sponsor is listed as a representative, in that case everything goes to the sponsor.
Good luck,
Sweden

Hi Sweden :)

Do you think that with the barcode system in place, the CIC should have our correct email addresses?? I imagine they just use a scanner of some sort to scan the barcode pages, and our information from IMM 1344 and IMM 0008 goes automatically to their computer systems? Way less prone to errors compared to typing our addresses manually into their systems, I think...

It's just that I've read horror stories on this forum, about the CIC's/visa office's getting people's email addresses wrong...grrr... =P

They sent the sponsorship approval only to me (sponsor) but from then on, all communications have been sent to both of us (sponsor and applicant)

Sometimes they do as Sweden described though. Not sure what causes the difference though.

They mixed ours around a bit. Sponsorship approval went to just me (sponsor), AOR from outland office went to both of us (sponsor & applicant), but then request for additional info for applicant went to just me again (sponsor).

In the forms you enter in 2 email addresses... so best to monitor BOTH carefully as who knows which one CIC will actually send the emails to!

THank you all for your response..!!! Now we know what to expect on our long wait.
