Maybe they are thinking about the "Core" rather than the more extensive "downtown" area.

thanks guys for your help .

dear syclla , how much should i expect for a 2 bedrom apartment in a nice neighborhood in downtown toronto ? i thought downtown is like full of drug addicts at night and dangerous ( like it was in chicago when i used to live there ) . my wife havent lived on her own before EVER ! and for sure she didnt live outside our country never.

Agreed it's all about definitions. The "core" to me is the financial district and the main blocks around it. So maybe Spadina to Church - Front to Dundas. I would still argue this area is extremely safe for families - but again, expensive.

I live at Bloor and Bathurst. For me this is not "downtown" (the financial district is "downtown"). But each time I say I don't live downtown people tell me I do.

So like you said - it's all about definitions.

My neightbourhood is like a small town.

In my neighbourhood a 2 bedroom will probably run you $2,500+ per month (depending on how recently renovated).

Downtown Toronto is not full of drug addicts. It's very safe at night (I'm female and I have no issues going out alone at night). Like any other city, there are pockets of Toronto that are less desirable and sometimes have a few drug addicts around. Queen and Jarvis can be a bit rough for example (but I wouldn't call it dangerous - I go there on my own all of the time, just not sure I'd want to live in that area). Since you are new to the city, it's important that you work with a real estate agent who can tell you about the properties you're interested in and the areas of the city they are located in. Good luck.

I'm at Danforth and Broadview and, even here, they refer to this as "downtown". It's very subjective...

Downtown Toronto (however you define it) is quite safe, and I think could be a great option for your wife. It would be very convenient for her, and she wouldn't need a car to tend to daily activities (shopping, gyms, coffee shops, etc). There is plenty of public transit available, and everything is in close proximity so finding her way around will not be daunting.

Another option is the Yonge/Sheppard area which offers many of the same conveniences, but also allows you to get a bit more space within your budget.

I would avoid any suburban areas as she may feel isolated and lonely.

That's a nice area. One of my best friends lives in the Minto condo at Pottery road.
