Hi Everyone:

I'm currently residing in Alberta. I have graduated with my MSc degree, and two days ago I have received my post-graduate work permit (PGWP). I have been looking for a job since June, and to be honest, I am a little bit overwhelmed and stressed by the fact that nobody wants to hire me. :-\ :'( :o The reason why they do not want to hire me is that I am either too overqualified (with my MSc degree) or just not that person they are/were looking for a particular position. I have been applying everywhere, including temporary jobs, as well as a permanent job, which is related to my profession and what I have been doing/studying throughout my undergraduate and graduate degrees.

As I cannot find a job in Alberta, so I was considering of moving to another province. Are there any provinces where it is easier to get a PR or find a job? :'( I have a work experience in mining including my degrees.

Thanks for all your suggestions and advice!

No where is easy to get PR or a job especially in the graduate marketplace. If your work experience and degrees are in mining that does tend to limit you so maybe have to look at a completely different career path.

I have no knowledge on your field unfortunately, but my comment is mainly around the "moving to another province" part. Have you been applying to jobs in other provinces while in Alberta? If not, i think that's what you should do, see if you could get some traction from out of province companies. You can always make it crystal clear in your cover letter that you are willing to relocate.

Relocating without a job will have cost impacts, and you wouldn't know if its the right decision or not - unless you have done your research beforehand and "know" that province "x" has a demand for your skills. Also having a professional network is key to your job search, you'd probably have a higher chance landing in a job if you were referred - say by one of your university's colleagues who now works somewhere, you will likely loose that advantage if you move to another province without a job in hand.

Bottom line is, there is no right or wrong, just do your homework, weigh the pros/cons before making a decision.

Thank you for all your responses. I have been looking for a job mainly in the province of Alberta because I wanted to get a job ideally not moving to another province and start everything over again as I do know really well the city and surroundings where I have been calling as a "second home city". However, due to my specific field, which is mining, I was thinking of considering other provinces as well. I had to wait for PGWP as I was not sure that time when I will receive my permit back. I was told that this process might take up to three months, but I was kind of lucky and it only took me a month. As the PGWP is a open work permit so there are no restrictions for me and I could live and work in any part of the country; however, I really would like settle down and get my PR by working with my field or working for different fields that are in a NOC. Therefore, I am looking for a job not in my field, but also totally different (entry-level) jobs; however, as I do not have enough experience, let's say, in retail most of time my application have been turned down due to lack of customer service and/or sales experience. In addition, I also targeting academic environments, as well as administrative positions as I have some work experience working in both for the academia and the NGOs.

And yes, I have not been invited for interviews yet, which is such a bummer and feel so worthless :'( :-\ :(; and I also started to look for a job across the country, ugh what the heck, but I would rather give a try than just sitting and desperately trying to find something within AB. :'( :'( :'(

I also have another question: If a person finished an academic institution in one province and wants to apply for a PR in another province, let's say using one of those streams for international graduates, are there any restrictions for that person or not? I tried to get an answer for my question, but did not get an exact answer for my question from them. They basically copied and pasted some information from their ready-to-send excerpts. I would love to hear some real experiences from you guys!

Thanks.

energy & mining is the worst hit industry in this economic bust. there are thousands of people living off EI and desperately need a job while basically nobody around is hiring.
