Hi there,

I have a question related to OHIP coverage. The last time I came to see my husband, over six months ago, was on a visitor status. Since the US are not required to get visas, that's what I am.

Anywho, our sponsorship status stage should be approved any day now, and I am wondering when I will be eligible for OHIP coverage exactly. Everything tells me that yes, I am eligible being the sponsored spouse (inland app), but then, I didn't think to change my address. Is this going to be a problem? We have a joint bank account and I will be changing it on there asap. Reading some other threads, seems like people are having so many problems trying to apply.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance,

I've indicated that I've been here FOR the six months but maybe not too clearly. So yes, I've been here as a visitor for 6+ months.

As far as I know, you may be eligible to apply for OHIP after you get your inland first stage approval and then have to do the 3 months waiting period like everybody else. However, talk to OHIP to make sure.

From our experience you cannot apply for OHIP until you have "landed" and you are able to show your signed COPR document to the person at Service Ontario. We did try to apply after first stage approval and were told we could not. We tried again after receiving the COPR and before it was signed and were once again told we could not. There was absolutely no problem once the "landing" had occurred and the COPR was signed. We did this the day after landing and this initiated the 3 month waiting period.

Looking at your older posts, it seems that you applied outland. If you apply outland, you don't get a first stage approval, you just get sponsor approved and transfer to visa office. As far as I know, most provinces will cover an inland spouse with first stage approval.

Thanks Leon. We applied Outland to be able to travel back and forth to the States. I guess that was the trade off in not being able to get OHIP sooner. They get you coming and going....lol
