Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find an answer to my question without much success so I decided to give it a try here. My boyfriend is taiwanese and I want to sponsor his immigration so we can both live together in the province of Quebec later on. Our plan is to move during by the end of the next summer. Since he's still in Taiwan, we're opting for an Outland application.

The process time for the Hong Kong office is 9 months + 3 months for the initial assessment so I guess it should take us around a year. The problem is that I heard the Medical Checks are only valid a year and we might have problems if it expires before my boyfriend lands in Canada. For some reasons we cannot leave Taiwan before July 2016 so I'm afraid that if we send the papers too early, he might get an answer too soon and we might be unable to go to Canada on time before the medicals expires...

I have seen some people in the spreadsheets who sent their application to the Hong Kong office and were landing around six months after they sent the papers...

Does somebody any some clue on when we should apply and what are the consequences of applying to early and not being able to make it within a year?

Thank you

As far as I know for outland, when you get CoPR you must land before the expiration date. If you fail to do that or extend it, you lose your PR.

If you're unable to leave Taiwan then you should not apply until you are. Just do the medical when you apply, or when they ask for it.

Apply now without doing the medical test.

It will take them around two months to finalize your sponsorship application. Then, they will ask for the medical test. By that time, it will be August already.

Best luck.

You can't sponsor boyfriends, just spouses and common-law partners. Assuming you're not married, so have you lived together for at least 1 year with evidence/proof of the cohabitation?

Sorry Rob_TO I shouldn't have used the word boyfriend like that. We've been living together for more than one year and we have quite a bunch of official papers proving our cohabitation :)

Sa3Sa3 thank you for your advice, I guess by doing like that it might also slower the process a bit because it does not follow the "normal" procedure, does it?

Thank you automaton82, I wasn't aware that even an extension might impact the PR like that.
