Hi, in the description of our relationship developed, should we talk about when we started talking about immigration? for us, it was about 4 months after we began our cohabitation.

No, I don't think its relevant for your application.

Your relatioship its the main subject and the most important, stick with that.

Good luck!

It's in some of our chat logs that I'm including in our proof. For that reason, I think I will state why we picked Canada instead of the USA since we could've picked either, but that's just me.

22-11-2013!
My wife and I wrestled with that same question ourselves. At first I was set to put some info into our application that showed there was discussion around how we would/could face the challenge of getting married and going through the immigration process. We could of gone through inland or outland processes. Outland won out in the end.

But this is a subject that any forward thinking couple is going to have to look at if they feel the relationship is worth pursing to the "next" step.

At first I was all set (with reservations) to include a email conversation between myself and the marriage commissioner we used in Alberta. My reservation was based on my own usage of the words "make her legal" in my talks with the commissioner, in context of my state of mind at the time, and trying to get things buttoned up with my wife's work visa, her work situation, the challenges around trying to figure out what arrangements would be needed for her child back in the Philippines and other things, all coming together at one time.

There was nothing at meant in any un-toward way by the use of the words "make her legal", but on the face of it, someone maybe doing a quick scan over documents sitting at a desk in some office somewhere towards the end of a long day, it might of given them just enough reason to pause and take a second look at our paper work.

So after discussion with my wife, and her somber second thought, reiterating my initial concerns that one piece of the package was left out, if for some reason it is needed later no problem it can be produced and explained then.

Now just a little over a month into the process, I think we made the right choice to not include that bit, at least not now, as we have received our first stage approval and the application package is being forwarded to Manila as I type this.

You will have to make the choice that seems most correct for you, and cross you fingers. Good luck with it though!

I included a short paragraph about how we decided between Canada and the United States, and how he originally wanted me to move there, but I convinced him to come be with me in Canada. I think it was relevant both to our relationships' development and to show his attitude more clearly. I thought this was relevant for us, though I do know some couples avoid any immigration discussion in their files.

We didn't put any mention of immigration in our application. I figured they would be more concerned about how genuine our relationship is, and how we qualify as common law, to care about that. I mean obviously it came up some time though. But I didn't think it would add anything to the evidence we presented.

We mentioned that we had originally assumed she would move to the US because of my kids but her family is a close one and insisted I at least come and check out Estevan before we started filing paperwork. And it turned out I loved it there so our plans changed...

We figured it helped show how things developed between us, how we handled challenges and issues etc.

I would avoid all talk of immigration, just to be safe. It partly depends on where the applicant is from and how much other evidence of a genuine relationship you have. If an American/Canadian couple includes emails or letters where they discuss which country to live in, that would be fine. But for couples where the applicant comes from a country with a high suspected incidence of marriage fraud, it is a risk. It might make it look like the only thing the applicant is interested in is immigration, in which case the PR visa will be refused.

So yes, of course immigration is something a couple has to discuss, so it could show your development as a couple. At least look really hard at what you are submitting and make sure it appears natural and that there is far more communication where immigration is not mentioned.
