Hi, I have a confirmed admission for a graduate certificate program in Cambrian College and has already paid the fees for the May intake but due to COVID it got deferred to Sept2020. Now I am looking to apply for the student permit and came across the news that there's a two-stage study permit process now and that seems reasonable provided the fact I don't have to risk sending the GIC to Canada now as its uncertain as to when they would allow students to enter Canada. However, i dont understand how do you apply for this two-stage study permit ? is it through the normal permit process or SDS ?? is there anyone who has got the first stage approval as of yet ?
Hi! @Dafaqisgoingon , is this letter ( that you came across from Conestoga ) a support letter for the fall term itself, or it's a notification from the college confirming that people can travel by the end of 1st term?
It's not guaranteed. Just that if they allow international students to travel to canada (essential travel), with this letter we will be able to show some evidence that our travel is essential even though the course is 100% online. Now they only allow students with student permits approved before 18th March, even with that students have to prove their travel is essential.
AS I understood, traveling to canada is essential if,
* your course requires an open internet connection and you can't have that in your country (eg : china)
* your course has hybrid delivery option (inclass + remote online)
* 50% in canada study requirement for PGWP
PS: Nothing is guaranteed and this is valid only if they allow international students to go to canada (as of now they allow students who have students permits approved before 18th march)
Just go through the normal process bro. If you can go through the SDS go through that, faster

I have been accepted for the fall intake for masters program and thinking of deferring the admit to the winter-2021. Now, since its still not clear that the winter semester be online and when they will allow the international students to travel, do you guys think its better to defer it to May-2021 instead of Jan-2021. My university has may intake too so that an option for the deferral. Appreciate the suggestions on this. I was almost prepared to defer the admit to winter intake only when I received the admit but now looking at the situation has made me rethink.
As has been noted, Canada would like to have it both ways by maintaining the flow of international student fees, while keeping them from entering the country as much as possible. The fact that there is no guarantee of approval in the second stage cannot be stressed enough, and good luck getting a refund from the school if you're refused.
Issuing PGWPs to people who have never set foot in Canada is a dubious proposition given that the government is much more interested in getting Canadians back to work right now, and they probably aren't even thinking that far in advance. At best, people can hope that travel restrictions will be eased in time to allow them to complete over 50% of their programs in Canada.

The one who will suffer from this are those with 1 year course..as they'll have no other option..its better to defer the program to max..
