I have a meeting Thursday for landing I'm pretty sure, now my question is what do I wear?
Is a pair of straight leg jeans a bad idea

I don't see anything wrong with jeans as long is it's still in good condition and you are comfortable.

I "landed" in Canada several years ago in a bus. The bus was going from New York and we arrived in customs by 7am. I slept in bus, and was sleepy at landing, had jeans and leather coat (it was cold). So, feel free to wear any relaxed wear.

Mine took maybe 20-30 minutes. They looked over my b4, explained the rights/responsibilities of a PR to me, and had me sign the COPR, and stapled it to my passport. There was also a bit of paperwork for importing my car. Then they gave me a packet of information relevant to the province I was landing in--how to get a SIN number, how to qualify for healthcare, that sort of thing. Some of it wasn't relevant to me, as I landed in Ontario and am residing in Alberta, and it was all Ontario-specific. They also confirmed my mailing address so that they could send me the PR card. Overall, everyone was friendly and the landing process was pretty painless.

I was able to get my SIN number immediately, and you can work once you have a SIN. I was also able to transfer my driver's license right away (I'm from the US; if you're from somewhere else, there may be different rules) by showing my COPR/passport to prove I was in Canada legally, and also my rental agreement, to show that I was a resident of Alberta.

Note: They were only able to give me credit for about a year of driving history, as the license that I turned in to them had been issued about a year before and I did not have records of having a license prior to that, so I have a GDL

I was really nervous too!

I should also mention that my husband came with me to my landing. We were not required to be separated at any point, and they only even asked if he was my husband before explaining the bit where a PR can live outside of Canada with a Canadian citizen spouse without running afoul of the residency requirements.

Being able to stick together during the landing helped make me a lot less nervous!

Thanks for replying I've been a nervous reck for the last few days now I feel better!
good luck with the interview - I'm sure it will go well! from what most people say, it's more a formality, where they confirm your identity and inform you about your rights and obligations and make sure they have the correct address etc - so you can relax, it will go well!

About working - as the previous post mentioned - you need to get a SIN. It's quite an easy process usually, here is the link to "how to get a SIN number" http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/about/reports/sin/applying.shtml
Once you have done that, you can apply for any job....

For your driving licence, it really depends on where you are from, and which province you are residing in. Here is the link from CIC http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomers/after-transportation-driving.asp
then choose the province you will be residing in, and it will explain how to do it.

Good luck,
