It's not mandatory, but preferred. They ask where you've traveled last time and for how long, where was current passport issued and check stamps in the current passport. If there's no current passport, it may be fine, but it also increases chances for RQ at test. So if it's not a question of exceptional difficulties, just renew it.

EastRider my passeport was valid for the period of the 4 years and it is still valid. but it will expire in May 2014 and I will apply January 22, 2014.
They will find stamps of the 2 travel I made during the 4 years. And after, I just don't need to renew it because I want to get the canadian passport after for my travels in the future. Plus no travel planned for the next year. So no need of a passport.
I don't know how it increases the chance of RQ? they want me to stay in canada as PR and I am doing it.
Please advise. Thanks

you can update your timeline for me
I was hit by an RQ this morning
felt like a kick in the stomach!!
don't know what do to do now and how long this will freaking take !!
I didnt speak a word since I received the letter and this is very sad and unexpected news
everything was very good during the exam and the interview
it must be the selfemployment thing that triggered it!!

You have RQ after exam, this may take longer than before exam to get oath. But as long as you submitted it with all evidences you have, you should be good. I read somewhere in this forum that there are a few people who got oath, same situation as you.

Sorry to hear that, RQ is nothing pleasant.

Though there's hope it'll be going faster for 2013 and newer applicants as CIC is increasing its budget and number of judges and personnel.

Likely you'll get better timeline than RQ recipients from the previous years.

For the starting points with RQ, check this post, and it will lead you to more important info and points. RQ is a very broad topic and can't be entirely put into one post or even one discussion, so you'll need to do some research.

If you have access to a scanner and can scan the newer CIT 0171 (10-2013) form (with removing personal info), it'd be appreciated. Since nobody knows how exactly it differs from the previous 2012 version. Reportedly, documents or information is asked only in 4 year window, unlike in its previous edition.

The Form number is CIT 0514 (08-2013) B
Its shorter only 5 pages and no social ties section
will try to scan it and email it
How depressing!!
so will I be seeing a judge for sure?
and do you know how long iot takes? to see a judge?
the letter was dated 17th January

What if I didnt give them authorisation to contact the CBSA? and request the history of enteries my self? will they not like it?
how can I request one online?
Thanks

Wow, this looks like something new. There is RQ form and newer document request form, but there's no CIT 0514 known.

Does it look anything like "Residence Questionnaire CIT 0171 (09-2012) E" or "Request for Documentary Evidence of your Residence in Canada CIT_520 (10-2013) E" from this website?

No, it doesn't automatically mean you'll have to see a judge.

Nobody knows how long RQ will take, but seems timelines are better for later applicants, for 2013 and after.

But again, it's impossible to tell now because of lack of data.

I would both request it myself to know what CBSA has on me and give authorization to CIC.

That permission would allow CIC to use CBSA terminal to see your info recorded with CBSA, especially about entries, but probably not limited to that.

I don't know whether they'll like it or not, but, certainly, there's a potential for them "not liking it" and more question to you. I don't know what critical mass of question can trigger a judge hearing.

If you have a strong reason in mind not to give them authorization and will be able to explain it (like concerns about privacy and extent of information may be disclosed by granting such authorization), if required, probably you can try sending your own CBSA copy without granting authorization, though it may add questions. You will be risking in that case, simply because nobody knows how exactly it'll be perceived by CIC.

Did you grant them permission to access CBSA in your original application form, by the way? There was that question there too.

Go to this website https://atip-aiprp.apps.gc.ca/atip/ where you can go through request form, it's self-explanatory for the most part.

Do a request under Privacy Act, then it's free. You need to attach a scan of an ID such as a PR card or a driver's license to confirm your right to a personal request.

Yes I did grant them authorisation in the citizenship application
and to be honest the form looks very similar to the citizenship one
not much difference
I even handed the interviewer a copy of the entries list by the CBSA to help them avoiding an RQ and a translation for the stamps and a whole copy of the passports so nothing new they will see from me this time!

Are you sure it's RQ, does it look anything like this and is called Residence Questionnaire? http://residencequestionnaire.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/cit_0171e_09_2012-e.pdf

Because there's another form which is just a request for additional documents, and CIC promises faster processing with this form than with RQ: http://residencequestionnaire.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/cit_520-e.pdf

I don't get what CIT 0514 is, probably it's lighter version of RQ or something.

It is a lighter version of theRQ only 5 pages
how do I upload what I scanned?

after looking at both documents above mine is identical to the first document
it is definitely an RQ :(

If you have pdf, you can upload it using https://rapidshare.com/ or http://www.scribd.com/upload-document

If it's a picture, http://imgur.com/ or http://tinypic.com/

If you have gmail account, you can upload to https://drive.google.com and then share it publicly (like timelines in my signature).

No need to upload it it identical to the first document you linked

Easy Rider
The Linked you shared referes to the possibility of requesting information about what could be the specific concerns from the CIC.
Is that possible? If so that will be very useful
Do you know how to require that?
Thanks
