visitor visa approval

I have applied to visitor visa two months back from U.S where I was studying and yet to get a decision as it says still back ground check is processing.
The real problem was in December I, was travelling to my home country for winter vacation where I will stay at least for a month.
I was wondering what happens if they(embassy) request to submit my passport upon approval when I was in vacation.
Will it have any time frame to submit the passport?
Will the embassy people give us some time?
Can we delay in submitting the passport?

Any thoughts/suggestions would be really appreciated.

Hello

I am a PR holder and is planning to submit a Visitor Visa Application for my Father. I am trying to figure out what document needs to be submitted against the "Purpose of Travel" .

Text from the site :
You must submit proof that you are coming to Canada for a temporary visit. Examples of what you can provide as proof:
A scanned copy of:

1. Your flight ticket departing Canada,
2. Your travel itinerary (e.g. places you will visit or stay, such as hotel booking),
3. Proof of a medical appointment.

Does this mean - that I need to book tickets even before the Visa is granted. At another place they have mentioned not to book the tickets unless the visa is granted. Please suggest.
