Are you Korean or just visiting Korea?

Your wife can definitely go to Canada to have the baby. She'll need to check into provincial guidelines to make sure she qualifies for healthcare when the baby is born. Do you know which province or city she wants to live in Canada? Keep in mind, most provinces require you to live there for at least six months or they can charge you for the services. If she just wants to have the baby in Canada, then leave, she will need to pay.

It's highly unlikely you'll be allowed to visit Canada.

Ontario has a 3 month waiting period to get healthcare. Your wife will need to be in Ontario 3 months before she can have healthcare. If the baby is born before then, she will have to pay for the services.

How did she become a citizen? It may be possible to have the baby in Korea and still have Canadian citizenship for the baby.

You can read it here : http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/ohip/

It says "OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase private health insurance in case you become ill during the OHIP waiting period."

Meaning you must live in Ontario for three months before you can register for healthcare. They will not pay for any services used before the three months. If she can't return in time, she can see about hiring a mid-wife as they are usually cheaper than the hospital. Just be forwarned, if there any complications, she will have to go to the hospital anyway.

Private insurance won't cover costs related to pregnance or the delivery since the pregnancy will be classified as a pre-existing condition. During the three month waiting period, you and your wife will have to pay for all health care she receives out of your own pocket.

As far as what insurance covers, you have to ask the insurance companies. The one I bought was 80% everything for emergencies only.

You can search for insurance on google. Most companies like Manulife and Blue Cross Blue Shield offer supplemental insurance.

However, since your wife is already pregnant, most insurances won't cover that. They usually have a exclusion of childbirth or any childbirth related expenses for the first 8-10 months of the policy and that's after you pay the maternity rider fee, which is usually very expensive.

Are you set on Ontario? Would your wife live in another province? Does she have friends or family in other provinces?

so it's mean we can't do insurance before or after for pregnancy?

3-6-2013 Finally! all the best everyone
you know what you can do, once your wife get pregnant at her 2,3month of pregnancy send her to live in canada so she will be here for 3 month and be covered for app. and delivery and probably not have the baby during that 3month waiting period.Or even to be safe once she get prenant tell her to come to canada so she can have her prenatal appointment after 3months. But if she is a canadian then she doesnt need to wait 3month to use healthc ..

It's not mean. It's business. Insurance companies are out to make money, just like everyone else.

If she isn't pregnant yet, you need to start making a good plan now. Most insurance I've seen has a 8 month waiting period with monthly dues and a maternity rider that costs about $2500-3000 CAD. Meaning you pay the monthly fee plus a one time fee for the maternity rider. Then the insurance pays about 80% of expenses. (The exact coverage will be listed in the contract.)

There's no way to tell if this is a 'good deal' or not up front. We can't tell what will happen in the future with the pregnancy and birth. A simple, at home birth with a mid-wife (no hospital, no doctor) can cost less than $5000. A complicated birth with surgery can cost over $20,000.

No insurance company will insure your wife for pregnancy and birth if she's already pregnant. If she doesn't declare she's pregnant, they will cancel her policy. The only way to get insurance beforehand is to sign up, pay all the fees, and wait out the waiting period before becoming pregnant. (Waiting period generally 8-12 months.)

Really, the easiest and cheapest option is for her to come to Canada ahead of time, try to find work, and qualify for OHIP. She can travel while 2-3 months pregnant. Chances are, she will have to come without you.

Also, most airlines have restrictions on women 7 months and over pregnant from flying. It can cause an unsafe spike in blood pressure and cause harm to the baby and mother. It can be very dangerous, so make sure any flights are before 7 months. (Unless she develops problems with blood pressure, then it can be earlier. This is very serious. The blood pressure can kill. I had a co-worker with blood pressure problems in her pregnancy and she almost died.)

It's good you're investigating and now to make plans. :)

Yes, you can purchase the insurance anywhere, it just needs to be travel/visitor insurance for Canada. It must be accepted in Canada by doctors and hospitals. So you need to look for traveler's insurance valid in Canada or buy traveler's insurance from a Canadian company for Canada.

I bought mine in the USA. I had to fill out a form, including where I was visiting and how long. Then the company recommended different insurance plans.

The company will charge the maternity rider up front if you elect to use it. They won't care where you are and if you don't use it, they won't refund it. So if you buy the maternity rider and your wife doesn't get pregnant, you will be out the money. Keep in mind, most insurance companies won't pay 100% of costs. It's usually 50-80%.

If your wife can stand to be in Ontario for at least six months alone, it's better to live in Ontario and get OHIP. (And can afford to not work or find a new job. Even though it's illegal is discriminate, it's hard for pregnant women to find a job if they are showing.)

If your main concern is the baby become a citizen of Canada, she can have the baby in Korea (or Pakistan) and then sponsor the baby for a PR when she sponsors you. Then you move to Canada and live for four years. You and the baby can apply for citizenship. Your wife is a citizen, so she can stay with you in Korea (or anywhere else) and sponsor you outside of Canada.
